ENERGY: The first annual Diamond State Surf Classic launched with some nice, clean waist- to chest-high sets rolling through the lineup. The break, known for its long, mushy rights, produced some fun lines for all ages to tear into. Hurricane Nicole had sent just enough solid groundswell in to produce powerful inside sections.
FIRST TIME AT FIGHT CLUB: Surfrider Foundation Delaware Chapter outdid itself this year by throwing the first ever Diamond State Surf Classic. The competition was held at a well-known Bethany Beach break and drew a decent crowd featuring 75 competitors. The Masters division (16 years old and up) featured 60 competitors while the Junior division had 15 competitors 15 years old and under.
THE SLIDE: The Delaware surf scene has seen a huge increase in surfers over the past couple of years. Lineups that were once empty are now shared with surfers of all ages and skill levels. This year, surfers of all ages gathered to enjoy great swell and good vibes at one of Delaware’s premiere breaks. “The event went better than expected with great cooperation from participants and volunteers,” said Kevin Chandler, Vice President of the Surfrider Foundation Delaware Chapter. “The waves, wind, and weather cooperated the whole day for two main divisions, Masters and Juniors. On top of that, local businesses sponsored special awards like the Dogfish Head Tube of the Day and Surf Bagel’s Cutback of the Day.”
THE MEN: The Masters devision was filled with local talent riding all crafts mixed into the group. Jordan O’Boyle and Alex Mitchell took the win, but it didn’t come easy as pro skimboarders Tom and Dave Bracht tore it up with crowd-pleasing airs and cutbacks. The brothers didn’t walk away empty-handed though, with Tom Bracht taking Air of the Day and Dave Bracht winning Cutback of the Day. O’Boyle also styled his way to the Wave of the Day award. In the Juniors division, Jack Lee and Sam Shoenfeld took the win. The two worked hard and walked away with a trophy that literally towered over them.
