Jupiter, FL, pro and aerial extremist Ryan Helm — who earned
distinction as ESM’s very first Who
Da Guy way back in 1991 along with our “Best Performance By An East Coast
Surfer (Home)” Award in the 2006 ESeMMIES — has always known how to keep
his stock diverse. Helm’s competitive results include three straight ESM
Airshow victories at Sebastian Inlet’s annual Quiksilver King of the Peak
contest, representation on the East Coast Team at the 2006 ESPN X-Games, and
countless strong finishes everywhere from the Oakley Unsound Pro and the Globe Sebastian
Inlet Pro to the Jupiter Fall Classic and the Monster Pipeline Energy Pro. Helm
balances the strategic side of his surfing life with extended tube-hunting
missions throughout Mainland Mexico, where his wife Paola’s family lives. And most
recently, Helm started Native Surf School in Jupiter Beach to parlay his, um...
not-so-young age into a lucrative deal with BP, whose gasoline line Invigorate
“helps cars run younger for longer,” much as the 35-year-old Helm continues to
school surfers half his age.
But on July 10th and 11th at Carlin Park in Jupiter Beach, Helm will
translate his lifelong surfing success to teaching children ages 8-15 the
thrill of riding a wave for the first time, via the BP-Native Surf School Surf
Clinic. In cooperation with the Palm Beach Police Athletic League and the Lew
Brandolini Foundation, Helm will teach 25 children selected by the PBPAL the
fundamentals of surfing and ocean safety on Friday, July 10th, before an open
clinic begins at 9:00 am on Saturday, July 11th for the first lucky 25 kids.
BP will be onsite both days to give away prizes and provide beachgoers
with the chance to win $10 gift cards. The Quiksilver teamrider will also be
available throughout the day to sign autographs for the kiddies and share his
ocean knowledge. Helm will spend the remainder of 2009 promoting the BP Younger
For Longer Challenge, a nationwide contest that asks Americans to personify the
“Younger For Longer” message themselves. The top 20 entrants will receive BP
gas for a year, and one grand prizewinner will be awarded $10,000 in BP
gasoline.
