After riding out an
indescribably fruitful amateur and professional career on Wave Riding Vehicles
Surfboards, 35-year-old Kitty Hawk, NC, local Noah Snyder announced today to
EasternSurf.com that he’s finalized his decision to sign with Nags Head,
NC-based shop Outer Banks Boarding Company as one of their two premier
professional teamriders (alongside close friend and protégé Jesse Hines). The ultimate
decision followed a cascade of rumors about Snyder signing with Virginia Beach,
VA, store Coastal Edge. “You guys are the first to know,” laughed Snyder. “My
wife Corissa doesn’t even know yet. But she knew I was leaning that way. I’ve
thought long and hard about it, and this was probably one of the toughest
decisions I’ve ever had to make. In the end, I had to go with my gut.”
The barrier islands’ first-ever professional surfer — signing a clothing
sponsorship contract with Billabong in 1995 before following U.S. licensee Bob
Hurley as he launched his own company, Hurley International — Snyder has
been the face of Outer Banks surfing for over two decades, posting impressive
results in dozens of sanctioned and specialty pro competitions; joining well-publicized
philanthropic missions abroad; starring in his own documentary (Noah’s Arc); instituting the surfing-and-fitness-oriented
Outer Banks Surf Boot Camp; and gracing countless editorial spreads in nearly
every international surfing publication in the world, including Eastern Surf Magazine, which he’s earned
the cover of a record five times. Throughout his entire 23-year-long
entrenchment in the sport, Noah has been a dedicated “Friend of the Porpoise.”
“A lot of good has come out of these 23 years with WRV,” commented Snyder. “I didn’t
leave on any bad terms whatsoever, but it was emotional. I learned a lot from
them and they gained a lot of exposure from me, so I feel our relationship has
been mutually beneficial. Sometimes change is a good thing, while at the same
time being the hardest.”
More than just a contract signing, or even a new career phase for the father of
two (four-year-old Ezra and two-year-old Jaida), Snyder cited this new
commitment to Outer Banks Boarding Company as a welcome home party of sorts: “My
whole surf career started with Lynn Shell (OBBC founder and owner/ Shell Shapes
boardbuilder) and his boards. When he left WRV way back when, I was kind of sad,
because I had to make a decision to either leave WRV or say goodbye to Lynn.
That was a tough departure, so I feel like we’re coming full circle now and
making up for some lost ground. Plus, his shop fits my lifestyle and history in
regards to the story I’m trying to get across to people. They’re faith-based
and I’m excited to see what the future holds for us.”
Noah maintained that he will start riding mostly Firewire Surfboards, one of
Shell’s better accounts, while also taking advantage of the opportunity to try
out some Super Surfboards and Shell Shapes. But he was quick to give credit to
the many craftsmen and other employees of Wave Riding Vehicles who helped him get
to where he is today, finishing his official statement with, “I still love
those guys no matter what.”
