“Ski poles.”
Circa 2000-2002, about the time when Matt Warshaw was
compiling his Encyclopedia Of Surfing,
those two words worked magic among surfing’s word-nerd contingent. You’d need a
quote or sometimes an entire article, so you’d call Warshaw’s San Francisco
library, and ask him, Marcus Sanders, or Nathan Myers to fax it over. (That’s
right: fax it over.) Or they’d need a
decent photo of some ‘70s freerider from the magazine files and do the same. In
either case, no money ever changed hands. Barely a please or a thank you. You’d
just make a request and say the secret password: “ski poles.” A short little
sexually suggestive phrase that, without getting too descriptive, promised a
simultaneous happy ending for the two dudes who helped you out.
It was a joke, obviously, but it showed just how needy you were —
and just how thankful you would be. Ten years later, that phrase remains a
perfect metaphor for Warshaw’s tome of achievement: a magnificent act of
selflessness that’s given untold pleasure to surf-history geeks across the
globe with not much to show for it but
an invisible hand job, and the promise of some future payback that was never
serious to begin with.
Well, it’s 2011, and writers gots to find new ways
to get paid, yo. So Warshaw, who last published the mammoth History Of Surfing, has decided to release his unparalleled grasp
of surf knowledge onto the online world by launching a new website version of
the Encyclopedia, complete with video
clips, community apps, and frequent updates. But he needs help getting it off
the ground. As of November 17th, his Kickstarter campaign to raise $20,000 was actually
two grand over its goal. But he more Warshaw raises, the more time he buys to
build something epic and source other funding. Give more than $10 and you get
something back, from T-shirts to personal items to signed copies of the
original print version. Spend a grand, you even get a bio and a photo.
We reached out via e-mail to see what else Warshaw
had to say about the project. (Sorry, our fax was broken.) Read on for the
uncut response, and then give Warshaw a reason to feel extra thankful by
donating at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1391193483/encyclopedia-of-surfing
ESM: Describe the online project itself and how it will be
different from the print version of the Encyclopedia
Of Surfing?
Matt
Warsaw: As far at the book goes, the
words came out fine but the visuals sucked. Because there were so many fuckin’
words. Online I get to use a ton of photos and vid clips. Also I get to run a
blog, which means I can rave on about what's happening on any given day. Plus I
can update everything as needed. And will it be an ongoing project. Full-time
until I retire. That's the plan, anyway.
ESM: Does this mean no new print versions? Or is there
hope for another edition?
MW: Harcourt asked last year if I wanted to do one
final print edition, and the old me
very much wanted to say yes, but I decided to roll the dice and go digital, on my own, without a
publisher or partner. On December 7th, we either have the cash — minus Kickstarter's cut, minus Amazon's cut — or we come up short and I'll
just curl up and leave you all alone.
ESM: Every journo in the field is gonna pirate this thing.
Why not team up with one of the major sites or mags?
MW: Almost had a couple of partnership deals, but when it
came right down to it I didn't want to give up enough. At this point in my
so-called career, I want to at least be able to call the shots in terms of how
the thing looks and feels. Which is why I've been broke or close to it since I
left Surfer Magazine 20 years ago.
ESM: We joked before about selling off entries to make
money: I noticed that you actually do have a donor page to list names — and
one level even gets a photo. How much money does it cost to get the cover shot?
MW: I don't know. We should talk about that. How much does ESM sell the cover for?
ESM: How about this: If ESM pays you $1,000 can we get John Holeman inserted into the
official “aerial”' entry?
MW: I'm the first to admit that there are mistakes and
omissions and screw-ups in Encyclopedia
Of Surfing. Holeman was pretty rad. He might deserve to be in the aerial
entry, yeah.
ESM: Seriously, it seems like topics of substance have
taken a back seat to tracking celebrities and trends of late: is this a sign of
modern surf culture? Or can you point to a time from your research when the
media was similarly fluffy?
MW: Surf writing is better right now than it’s ever been,
in part thanks to social media and blogs. Lewis Samuels and Postsurf… that was
a fantastic site. Seems weird to say, ‘cause my stuff is different from Lewis’,
but I'd read Postsurf and get all inspired, then bang out a chunk of History Of Surfing. This was like two or
three years ago. There's more crap in surf writing than ever before, as in all
kinds of writing, but if you search it out there is in fact more good stuff
then ever. Go back and read the old mags. Horrible, 97% of ‘em.
ESM: So, basically you need $20k to get it off the ground
– what then? Is there any way you can sell ads on the site to keep paying
you reasonably to maintain?
MW: These are the questions that put black circles under
my eyes. Short answer is, I keep my overhead super low, get one big sugar-daddy
corporate backer, maybe apply for some grant money, do fundraisers as
necessary, and hopefully the thing can then walk on its own.
ESM: If not, have you sussed out any local freeway onramps
for opportunities?
MW: Seriously, if it doesn't go I'll be bartending at my
brother-in-law’s pub in West Seattle.
ESM: Anything else you'd like to say?
MW: Kisses and handshakes, as appropriate, for all of you
good people who have donated to the site. Thank you, thank you.
ESM: What about ski poles?
MW: How fast can you get here?
