Regarding the current state of the 2nd
Annual Wave Riding Vehicles Battle Of The Banks in lieu of the cancellation on
October 17th, the contest is still on call, with the waiting period officially
lengthened through November 31st to ensure the most idyllic wave scenario for
this very special gentlemen’s duel, fashioned in a renegade, guerilla format.
As discussed in the competitor’s meeting,
held Friday, October 16th at the Outer Banks Brewing Station, organizers are
dedicated to a fair and democratic approach to running this event, where the
athletes are completely involved in the decision-making process.
With ocean overwash effectively closing
Highway 12 at S-Turns on Saturday, October 17th — leaving the
competitors, judges, and media divided — and compounded by the river-like
currents that nor’easter offered, both teams’ captains took a vote from present
team members and decided to hold off on running the contest until the next
swell.
This decision was complemented by
Surfline forecaster Kurt Korte, who suggested the likelihood of getting one
full day (needed to run the event) in clean, contestable, barreling surf is
“better than good.”
Bottom line: this is a surfer’s contest,
by the surfers and for the surfers, so every competitor’s voice will be heard
and their suggestions considered until we get the type of conditions this barrier
island surfing wonderland is famous for.
On a sadder note, everyone please say a prayer for Outer Banks Team Co-Captain and
marquee rider Jesse Hines, who broke his leg in two places while surfing on
Tuesday, October 20th. Jesse is facing a long rehabilitation process, so your
thoughts and prayers are appreciated. For event updates and status check, stay
