Amateur surfing on the East Coast will receive a
massive boost from Surfing America, the National Governing Body for surfing in
the U.S.A., when the Surfing America Prime Series presented by Got Milk? makes
its first Right Coast stop this weekend in Montauk, NY. Surfing America Prime
East is an invitation-only series that offers under-18 ESA and NSSA surfers in
good standing the opportunity to surf in four-man, 20-minute heats in front of
ASP judges utilizing ASP criteria, and offers the only path to the SIMA Surfing
America U.S.A. Championships presented by Verizon Wireless next summer. That
national championship in turn determines who will be selected to the coveted
PacSun U.S.A. Surf Team for 2010-2011.
In addition to the contest, scheduled for October
24th-25th at Ditch Plains, Eastern
Surf Magazine is sponsoring a Montauk Movie Night on Saturday the 24th at
Montauk Movies from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Legendary Australian surfer and current
PacSun U.S.A. Surf Team Coach Ian “Kanga” Cairns, who will be on hand
throughout the weekend to assist Surfing America Prime surfers, will also
introduce Bustin’ Down The Door, the
acclaimed documentary highlighting the Australian fight in the 1970s to create
professional surfing as we know it today. Dave Stanfield, widely considered the
“Voice of the Triple Crown,” will also lend his excellent announcing skills to
the contest throughout the weekend, in addition to giving a seminar at Montauk
Movie Night on “How To Talk To The Media,” before the whole shebang wraps up with
a showing of Billabong’s new flick Still
Filthy.
With Surfing America Prime East invites going out to
top-ranked ESA and NSSA surfers via officials from the respective organizations,
expect the cream of the Right Coast amateur crop to flock to Long Island’s
eastern end for the most action-packed event since ESA Easterns. BeachByte
computer scoring will ensure accurate and up-to-the-second tabulation, giving
ambitious young surfers the opportunity to step their game up to the national
level. “Participation in Surfing America Prime is required in order for Under-18
Prime division surfers to qualify for the U.S.A. Championships at Lower
Trestles, CA, next June,” Surfing America Executive Director Mike Gerard said.
Further Surfing America Prime East stops will come at Sebastian Inlet, FL, on
March 6th-7th, 2010, and the Outer Banks, NC, area on April 24th-25th. Ratings
based on the top two scores from those three stops will determine invites for
the SIMA Surfing America U.S.A. Championships.
Let’s refresh: the best amateur surfers on the East
Coast competing at one of our most hallowed breaks; a fun-filled and
informative Montauk Movie Night sponsored by Surfing America and ESM; and the opportunity to mingle, chat
with, and learn from two of the surfing industry’s most iconic figures. If
you’ve got a hankering for competition, it simply doesn’t get any better than
that.
