Achieving victory at some $100, winner-take-all shop comp that no one even knew
about in some honky tonk beach town is one thing. But for an East Coaster to
throw himself into the Huntington Beach Pier snake pit in the middle of summer
to win the Pro-Am final at Volcom Stone’s VQS Starfish Surf Series event,
beating out a lifelong local and one of his own team managers in the process —
well, that’s the kind of insubordination we love publicizing at EasternSurf.com.
The other finalists — Macy Mullen, Robert Patterson, and Teddy Navarro sat
close to the south side of the pier, which might have been a mistake (and Ford
Archbold’s switchstance hack in the shorebreak didn’t even register), because
it was pretty much a tête-à-tête showdown between Virginia Beach, VA, Hurley rider Michael
Dunphy and Hurley Surf Team Manager and HB A-lister Brandon Guilmette. Guilmette
surfed smart enough, but Dunphy schwacked a heat-winning lefthander to the
beach, earning him $500 and an invite to next year’s VQS Champs. (At press
time, it is unclear how Dunphy fared in the dodgeball exhibition and the
watermelon-eating contest.)
But what we really want to
know is this: Why is Dunphy still in California as Hurricane Bill — a
swiftly moving Category 4 storm — skirts the East Coast, setting up for
epic conditions from New England to Florida. Not to mention the fact that his
hometown pro contest, the East Coast Surfing Championships, is less than a week
away? We got Dunphy’s voicemail:
“I’m in El Salvador. If you wanna stay with me for ECSC it’s all good. I’ll be
back on the 25th. Later.”
There you have it. We’re all staying at Dunphy’s house in VB for the ECSC.
Brandon Guilmette’s bringing the wrecking crew.
