Imagine that you’ve just
spent the entire summer solidly landlocked in the heart of Middle America.
There’s nothing in the world you’d like more than a trip to the tropics and
some time out in the surf, but thanks to a crappy economy, you can’t afford the
plane ticket. So you’re screwed right? You’re thinking you might as well just accept
defeat and ride out the rest of your summer boredom. But luckily, you’re now
aware of your imminent salvation: Festiki 2010 is coming to your hometown of Dayton,
OH, and bringing with it enough Polynesian-themed surf stoke to keep you warm
through another snowy winter.
Fire dancing, live surf music,
tiki carving, classic car shows, and a Polynesian feast are just a few of the
activities planned for Festiki 2010, which is scheduled for August 14th at Old
River Park in Dayton. And although a celebration of surfing and island culture
held in a city nestled snuggly within The Buckeye State might seem inherently
ironic, last year’s inaugural event was so popular that organizers have managed
to attract a stacked field of heavyweight surf brand sponsors for Festiki 2010.
Monster Energy Drink, LandShark Lager, and monterey media inc. (exclusive
distributers of The Endless Summer films) have all signed on for the event, which is expected to draw upwards of
3,000 people.
Ron Kaplan, organizer of Festiki
and founder of ironic clothing brand Surf Ohio, believes that, although places
like Dayton are far from the beach, they still offer a viable market for the
surf industry and should not be overlooked. “I think that if a lot of surf
brands looked at their numbers, they would find that, without sales to the
Midwest, they would be losing a pretty sizable chunk of their revenue,” Kaplan
says. “Interest in surfing is surprisingly pervasive here, and I think the
companies who are sponsoring Festiki are appreciative of the audience that we
can deliver.”
But it’s certainly not all about
business at Festiki. Kaplan says that the primary purpose of the event is to
provide the ultimate staycation. “When most people from the Midwest think about
going on vacation, they want to be headed to the beach,” he says. “But lately,
everyone has had to scale back their plans. So when people come to Festiki,
they can get into the mindset of the beach lifestyle, at least for a day, and
it might help them forget that they’re not on that vacation to New Smyrna Inlet
or the Outer Banks.”
Festiki will also give back
to the seaside communities that Midwestern tourists often visit by donating
part of its proceeds to the Surfrider Foundation. “I’ve been really heartened
to see how many people from around here recognize and appreciate the goals of
the Surfrider Foundation,” Kaplan says. “Their mission is very important, even
to us.”
Regardless of their surf
savvy, Kaplan is sure that all the attendees at Festiki 2010 will enjoy a relaxing
day of fun in the sun. Gates to the event will open at 10:00 a.m., with live
stage performances starting at 2:00 p.m. and running through 10:30 p.m. Admission
is $10 per adult and $5 for ages 17 and under. Tickets for children under the
age of nine are free.
