The north side of Rudee Inlet in Virginia
Beach, VA, has provided a backdrop to some historic battles over the years. The
home of the oldest continuously run surfing contest in North America —
the East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) — the Oceanfront appendage
known as First Street Jetty draws international pros, local businesses, action
sports aficionados, and beachgoers of all sorts each year for what is widely
regarded as the party of the summer on the Right Coast.
But on the morning of Friday, July
24th, on the opposite side of Rudee Inlet, an unseasonably smoking chest to head-high
swell beached itself along the southernmost end of Croatan, at the Virginia
National Guard’s Camp Pendleton. It was here that an unlikely crew of dawn
patrollers set up base camp for the Wounded Warrior Project Surf Camp.
Wounded Warrior Project (WWP)
is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded
warriors, serving to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs
of severely injured service men and women and to provide unique, direct
programs and services to meet their needs. In this case, that meant gathering injured veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
and taking them surfing. Bringing the tents, food, giveaways, and positive
energy of any other topnotch surf camp you’re likely to find on the East Coast,
Billabong’s
Virginia Beach liaisons and professional surfers Raven Lundy and Jason Borte
resisted the urge to spend all the daylight hours riding their hometown waves
to instead selflessly aid the veterans in clearing
their minds, if only for a day, of the rigors of their overseas combat
experiences. ‘Bong enlisted camp
instructors for each soldier in the water and provided surfboards and rashguards
for participants, while Kustom provided sandals for volunteers, and Chipotle Mexican
Grill fed the entire unit. “Some might say
this was the best day for surfing all summer!” said Lundy. “All our warriors,
volunteers, and supporters had a great time. Big thanks to everyone who helped
organize this event and turn July 24th into a magical and memorable day —
the volunteers who were on hand to help the event run as smoothly as it did,
Billabong, Monster, Wounded Warrior Sports Program, and Chipotle Mexican Grill.
Most of all, thanks to all the brave warriors at home and abroad who serve and
protect our country and give American citizens the freedom and security to live
our daily lives.”
