St. Lucie County, FL,
residents got rocked last week with news that their county had the second
highest unemployment rate in the state, at 13.3%. But that bleak economic news
hasn’t stopped the Surfrider Treasure Coast Chapter from thriving — the organization
was only founded four years ago but already boasts 200 active members and 1500
supporting individuals and businesses. And this weekend they’re hosting the
biggest musical event to ever hit the Treasure Coast: the Surfrider 25th
Anniversary Art & Music Celebration presented by John Pierson’s Toyota of
Stuart.
The festival runs from
Friday, July 24th to Sunday, July 26th, with over 25 bands performing outdoors
under a covered stage at The Future Exodus II in Port St. Lucie. Other
activities include an art exhibit anchored by New Jersey surf-inspired artist
Jay Alders, a 30’ x 20’ halfpipe setup with team skaters made possible by
Goatramp, a souvenir photo area created by participating artist Tammi Clifford,
a mechanical surfboard machine, and a massive kids’ playland area, along with a
Classic & Custom Car Show and Harley Davidson & Custom Bike Show on
Saturday and a VW Car Show on Sunday.
The musicians will be
grouped by genre throughout the weekend — Latin Day falls on Friday with
bands like Mixed Culture, Spam All Stars, and Araka, and Locos Por Juana;
Classic Rock/Rock Day goes down on Saturday with iconic surf guitarist Dick
Dale, acoustic rocker Ben Prestage, and Jimi Jamison from Survivor; and
Reggae/Ska Day happens on Sunday with Rebel Alliance, The Movement, Passafire,
and Inner Circle (start practicing your “Bad Boys” chant now).
And the best part about the
Surfrider 25th Anniversary Art & Music Celebration? Tickets are well within
affordable range, with a three-day pass beginning at $15 for students and
Surfrider members, a $25 advance rate that only goes up to $30 at the gate, and
a $50 VIP package that includes entry to a Barefoot Wine-sponsored VIP party on
Thursday July 23rd, special event parking, a commemorative T-shirt, and access
to an air-conditioned building where musicians and artists will hang out for a
meet-and-greet. Children under 10 get in free throughout the weekend, regular
parking is included in the ticket price, and the Hilton Garden Inn at PGA
Village/Port St. Lucie is offering a discounted rate of $79 per night for
anyone attending the festival. Other major sponsors of the event include Gater
98.7, Wild 95.5, and Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers.
