You know the old
saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?” Well, sometimes even if it is broke,
you gotta soldier on — that’s exactly what Quiksilver is doing for their
“Gotta Make A Right To Go Left New Jersey Surf Tour,” which kicks off on July
20th and runs through July 25th. With the Quiksilver bus currently awaiting an engine
overhaul in Texas, key East Coast Quik riders Balaram Stack, Frank Walsh, and
Chris Eaves will traverse the Garden State Parkway in a flotilla of rental cars
and vans with two four-time World Champions — Florida’s own Lisa Andersen
and Aussie legend Mark Richards — along with Puerto Rico by-way-of Florida
wahine Amy Murphree and Hawaiian waterman Reef McIntosh.
No matter their
transportation, Quik’s Right Coast jaunt might just boast the most star-studded
lineup of the summer. And to sweeten the Eastside pot, their schedule finds
them celebrating some birthdays along the way with longtime New Jersey
retailers. On Tuesday, July 20th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., the Quik crew will get
off at Exit 82 and pump up Lavallette institution Ocean Hut Surf Shop’s 35th
anniversary, before jamming down to Exit 63 and gracing Long Beach Island
fixture Farias Surf & Sport’s 40th anniversary in Ship Bottom on Wednesday,
July 21st from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. After that, it’s down the road to Exit 30 and
Surfers Supplies in Ocean City on Friday, July 23rd from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.,
before the entire caravan floors it back up to Exit 91 to visit Brave New World
in Point Pleasant from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
For the weekend,
the “Gotta Make A Right To Go Left” tour heads back down to Exit 30 and Ocean
City’s 7th St. Surf Shop on Saturday, July 24th from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. In the
afternoon, they’ll hit up OC’s Heritage Surf Shop from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.,
before spending the night and waking up extra early on Sunday, July 25th to
throw the Heritage Gromtest at 37th St. in Sea Isle City from 8:00 a.m.
to 6:00 p.m. After gauging New Jersey’s surfing future, an awards ceremony will
follow at Heritage’s Sea Isle City location.
Each stop will
feature autograph signings, free posters, product tosses, the chance to win a
pair of Quiksilver’s fresh Cypher Boardshorts, and of course the opportunity to
hang out not only with some of the East Coast’s finest ambassadors but also
with a few international superstars as well. The whole crew will be surfing
each and every day if swell allows, so your best bet to meet up in the water
will come via Quiksilver USA’s Twitter account at www.twitter.com/quiksilverusa. If you’re posted up on the Jersey Shore between July 20th-25th and you
don’t show your face, maybe your surf psyche needs some repairs of its own.
Best of all,
quintessential Quik grom Balaram Stack will be blogging from the road
exclusively for EasternSurf.com, with
a little help from Quiksilver Regional Marketing Manager Andy Ryan. Here’s his
first hilarious update:
“Here we go New Jersey! Let’s get our fists pumping and
our tan on! Although we have a minor speed bump with the bus being stuck with a
busted engine in the Lone Star State, we will be rollin’ in momma’s minivans
with flat screens in the headsets and sitting on big 12-inch rims. Can’t wait
for it to begin! With Pipe specialist and mentor Reef McIntosh, the one and
only Mark Richards, Jersey’s finest Frank Walsh and Chris Eaves, the always-wonderful
Amy Murphree, and Lisa 'The Champ' Andersen, I can’t wait to make a right to go
left! Thanks, Balaram Stack.”
