The
special-events season is heating up around the East Coast surf world, with
star-studded movie premieres, photo exhibits, and charity fundraisers dotting
our calendar all the way until October. Down South Florida way, ESM Senior Photographer Nicola Lugo will
check off the last two boxes when he displays work from the last three years at
Sushi Jo’s 3rd Annual Hotter Than Wasabi Jam on Saturday, May 15th from
6:00-10:00 p.m. in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, with proceeds benefitting the Surfrider Foundation.
Compiled
from photographic assignments in the Bahamas, Hawaii, Mexico, Chile, North
Carolina, and right in his aquatic South Florida backyard, Lugo’s exhibit is a
surfer-oriented show highlighting our oceans' infinite beauty. “I did a
gallery show two years ago and really liked it,” Lugo says. “But I wanted to do
an event that would cater more to the dude with sand in his hair wearing an old
pair of Rainbow Sandals.” That core vibe is reflected in the surfers on display
in Lugo’s intoxicating collection of images — Baron Knowlton, Peter
Mendia, Shea Lopez, Brian Conley, mostly encased in aquamarine barrels from Reef
Road to Puerto Escondido. If you’re lucky, Lugo may even reveal a sneak peek of
his recent work in Mexico with Surfing
Magazine Staff Photographer Daniel Russo.
In addition
to Lugo’s photo exhibit, the 3rd Annual Hotter Than Wasabi Jam will feature
live music, raffles, poetry readings, and indoor and outdoor bars with drink
specials going all night. Remember, all proceeds benefit the Surfrider
Foundation, which will surely need the assistance as they ramp up their work
dealing with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Check out more info on the 3rd
