Back in
the days of slides, it would always drive editors and photographers crazy when
one of their prime subjects switched clothing sponsors, many times rendering
batches upon batches of photo sheets utterly useless for publication. Now that
surf photography has gone predominantly digital, “Dude, that little jerk!” has
officially morphed into the far more innocuous, “Good for him.”
That said, EasternSurf.com is genuinely elated
to announce the signing of two Tarheel surfers to a couple of the sport’s most
iconic brands. Hailing from Kitty Hawk, NC, Dana Quinn represents the new face
of Outer Banks surfing — bearded, dirty, a bit haggard (same as the old
face, when you really think about it). Turning heads in local lineups for years
but really coming into his own lately in the above-the-lip department, Quinn
has found a welcome place with Katin Clothing. At press time, the fair-haired
goofyfoot was checking off creepy left wedges at Lakey Peak — a
highlighted item on his annual Indonesia dossier — and couldn’t be
reached for comment. So we’ll just assume he had this to say, “Yeah, stoked.”
On the
opposite side of the North Carolina surfing spectrum, both geographically and
ambition-wise, 16-year-old Wrightsville Beach hot damn am and 2009 ESM Who Da Guy Dylan Kowalski signed
with Rip Curl early this February. One of the Mid-Atlantic’s most prized
amateur athletes, Dylan takes advantage of his Hawaiian upbringing and part-time
residency to compete in the Open Men’s, Explorer Men’s, and Explorer Juniors
divisions of the NSSA Hawaii Conference. He plans on bringing the heat at the
NSSA East Coast Championships this spring, while competing in the Surfing
America Prime Series across the Right Coast and select ASP Pro Juniors.
Here’s to
a bright new beginning for these two surfers… and two bright beginning files
for the ESM Photo Editor to start
filling.
