With two popular surfing piers that both boast strict
300-foot distance regulations, Volusia County remains a hotspot for run-ins
between surfers, fishermen, and lifeguards. I got a ticket for
drifting inside Sunglow’s 300-foot sign back in high school, and let me tell
you, the experience was humbling to say the least. Heck, big-name pros Peter
Mendia and Shea Lopez even got hassled by Volusia County Beach Patrol there
last year. But Volusia County Councilman Josh Wagner, who himself rips Daytona
Beach’s punchy beachbreak surf on a regular basis, has set out to change the no-surfing zone to a
more modest 75 feet. ESM Senior
Photographer Patrick Ruddy hit us up with this news from Wagner:
“Yo guys! Here's the
info I got:
Tomorrow (January 21st) at 10:30 a.m., the County Council will
decide on what the surfing distance should be for the piers at the Thomas C.
Kelly Administration Center on 123 W. Indiana Ave. in DeLand. The Main Street
Pier agrees that 75 feet is OK, but Sunglow is fighting it very heavily. If you
want to make a change, I need your help. It would be very helpful to let the
council know surfers and people fishing can get along. Remember to focus on
positives.”
So there you have it: a county politician that wants to make
a change for the better. All we have to do is show up.
