REHASHER
>> OFF KEY MELODIES.
NO IDEA 2004Who gives a shit about Hugh Hefner when we got our dirty hands on No Idea Records' little black book to discover their next guilty pleasure? Dial 420-6969 on your rotary phone and your call will be answered with Rehasher's debut album, Off Key Melodies. For
a project that took forever to be released, No Idea did a fine job of
bringing four barroom allies from Gainesville, FL, to the frontline
by way of up-tempo, kick-in-the-sack punk rock. Combining veteran know-how
with instinctive impulses, each member convincingly adds their piece
to the puzzle. Songs like "No Easy Way to Say......." and "Surrender"
find Roger Manganelli and Ryan Geis (of Less Than Jake and Army Of Ponch,
respectively) sharing straightforward guitar responsibilities and contagious
vocal melodies--a collaboration that trademarks the band's catchy sound.
Gui Amador (also a Ponch member), aside from beating the shit out of
his bass strings, serves up his usual dose of creativity and innovative
character on an instrument that most bands in this genre choose to hide.
As far as percussion, Rehasher's got that covered, as well, in
Jake Crown (of Savage Brewtality), who plays the drums like he's got
a fever and the only prescription is faster drums. Roger even enlists
the help of "side project" Less Than Jake bandmate Peter "JR" Wasilewsky
for a sped-up rendition of "Suffragette City." Bottle all of that up
with small-town angst in three-chord blasts and you've got something
sweeter than Yoo-Hoo. The result unleashes an undeniable brand of anthemic
battle hymns that are sure to raise a glass or a clenched fist in defiant
acceptance wherever it's heard.
You
don't have to take my word for it. But when these boys find time away
from their other musical endeavors to rock the asses clean out of your
Dickies pants, remember that you were warned. By
