MODEST
MOUSE >> GOOD NEWS FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE BAD NEWS. SONY 2004
When
we hear something we like--or dislike--we pass it on. With Good
News For People Who Love Bad News, Modest Mouse once again
gives us all something to talk about.
Like
the group's previous albums, Good News offers a distinct experience,
a little tough to describe--but easy to feel. Compositions built on
innovation, vocals overflowing with unfeigned feeling, and poetic
lyrics drenched in thought, humor, and stream-of-consciousness rants
flow seamlessly together. One characteristic of Modest Mouse
is their uncanny ability to sound gloriously uninhibited, while producing
a product that's meticulously organized and textured. This quality
is especially audible on Good News, even more polished and
robust than previous endeavors--without being overworked. Plus, the
addition of horn sections and string ensembles provide added color
to the already vibrant canvas. Palpably upbeat openers of "The World
At Large" and "Float On" set the scene with fresh optimism; "The Ocean
Breathes Salty" and "The View" bust open with energy; while more folksy
tracks like "Bukowski," "Blame It On The Tetons," and "The Good Times
Are Killing Me," provide diversity to the package. And let's not forget
the lyrics. Genuine meditations on life (and death) resound, such
as: "I know that's not what life's about/ But my thoughts were so
loud I couldn't hear my mouth," "It's true we named our children after
towns that we'd never been to," "You wasted life/ Why wouldn't you
waste death," and "The ocean breathes salty/ Why don't you carry it
in/ In your head, in your mouth, in your soul."
Good
News is just that--for Modest Mouse fans and anyone who
likes captivating, sincere rock music. And word is spreading quickly.
