GRABBASS
CHARLESTONS / BILLY REESE PETERS >> SPLIT. NO IDEA 2003No Idea
Records scrapes two more bands off the sticky barroom floors and pee-soaked
couches of Gainesville, FL, Grabass Charlestons and Billy
Reese Peters, to give us a split CD of indie-gnar songs worthy of
a Pabst Blue Ribbon slugfest. The first seven belong to the former,
the remaining seven to the latter. After one listen of such adrenalized
Grabass songs like "Bossman" and "I'm So Happy I Could Shit"
you'll find yourself draining the last of your chosen libation on your
head. It's that good.
A few lineup changes and the addition of Aaron Lay's front court vocals, and BOOM, you have Billy Reese Peters, which is more of the same in the way of skull-crushing guitar work. But BRP exhibits some subtle tempo changes with anthemic lyrics on songs like "Girlfriend Is A Pirate" and "What's Up Ding Dong?" Nothing slow here. And nothing wasted here... except the band, that is. Both groups share the same malt, hop, and barley-infested musical ethos onstage. And despite the impact of the recorded version, the stage is where they truly shine. You can see how much fun they're genuinely having: whether they're rocking hometown crowds at the packed-out Common Ground or touring Anytown U.S.A. to play in front of two people, mayhem ensues just the same. So if you happen to catch them and you don't want beer spilt on your precious little Urban Outfitter shirt, then prepare for a GC/ BRP show the same way you would a Gallagher concert--with a rainslicker and galoshes. And if you're one who prefers to cross your arms and bob your head, then do so outside, because this music demands a pulse. Grabass Charlestons and Billy Reese Peters--one foot in the gutter and the other right up our alley. By Pratt the Terrible |
