RUMBLESEAT >> RUMBLESEAT IS DEAD. NO IDEA 2005

Welcome to the wonderful world of side projects--a place where band members can take a step back from their main musical endeavors and play something completely different without the rigors of touring and the added pressure of pleasing a label, in turn allowing the listener to view his or her favorite musicians in an alternate spotlight. In this case, Rumbleseat shine the spotlight on Chuck Ragan and Chris Wollard from that "little-known" band, Hot Water Music.
Sadly enough, much like that little-known band and as the CD cover implies, Rumbleseat Is Dead. When they were alive, however, in the late '90s (while HWM was in full swing), this project served as yet another outlet to showcase the duel gruff vocals that would later act as the blueprint for any number of those bottom-feeding copycat fashioncore asshole bands that have been deafening our ears for the better half of the last decade. The formula for Rumbleseat, you might ask? Unplug HWM, control the angst, and add harmony by way of Chuck Ragan's then wife, ultra-talented singer/ songwriter Samantha Jones, who rounded out the trio. Formally of Bitchin', presently of Cassette, and forever sailing atop the vast ocean of Gainesville musicians whether she's singing lead, back-up, or karaoke night at the Ol' Barn, one thing's for sure: this girl can flat-out fuckin' sing.

Although this dynamic allows the band to do such covers as "Jackson" and "Sea Of Heartbreak" from superstars Johnny Cash and June Carter, true fans will find that the originals are what make the disc pull its weight. From the aptly titled "Picker" to the familiar song structure of "Saturn In Crosshairs," the trio traverses foreign musical landscapes without losing the listener along the way. The lyrics are what are to be expected from people whose main band was named after a Bukowski book, albeit with a little more subdued edginess. Quality to say the least, even if it does all seem like just a reflection now: "I watched that moon glow and felt the signs of changing times. I won't ever scratch what we said, times like this I wish would never end." Rumbleseat is dead. By Pratt The Terrible
