SPOON >> GIMME FICTION. MERGE 2005

After more than a decade of strong indie presence, Spoon's latest album Gimme Fiction further exhibits the band's ability to wear many hats. Hearing their music, it's also impressive that the group's core is comprised of only two members: frontman Britt Daniels and drummer Jim Eno.

Together, Daniel and Eno--while also enlisting the likes of engineer/ co-producer Mike McCarthy, as well as Ames Asbell and Sara Nelson of the Tosca String Quartet for viola and cello--have released one of 2005's most genuine and diverse rock albums. With strong alternative tones and a dose of Brit rock flair, Gimme Fiction delivers acoustic-driven ballads ("The Delicate Place" and "I Summon You"), funky anthems ("I Turn My Camera On" and "Was It You?") and catchy piano serenades ("My Mathematical Mind" and "Merchants Of Soul"). Notable elements on Spoon's 11-tune record are Daniel's fluid, granular vocals, well-woven, trippy lyrics and diverse instrumentation, plus Eno's precise and soulful drumming and thoughtful harmony arrangements--not to mention, miscellaneous hand claps, tambourine, string accompaniment and backup hoots and hollers.

Daniel sums things up best on Gimme Fiction's smooth-rockin' leadoff track "The Beast And Dragon, Adored." He croons, "I got a feelin, it don't come cheap... I got a feelin and then it got to me. It took its time a-workin into my soul. I gotta believe it come from rock and roll." We do, too, boys. By Mike Fish
