Volcom
Stone's Troy Powell let us know that
the Volcom Jellyfish Surf Series
went off in Long Beach, NY, at Lincoln
Blvd. on Saturday, October 15th. Things
didn't look too promising the day before
the event--with nuking onshore winds and
relentless rain souring the mood. But when
the wind switched offshore to the delight
of competitors, organizers and spectators,
head-high tubes were found spinning off
the Lincoln Blvd. Jetty. The talk
of the comp was local gremmie sensation
Balaram Stack while Rich Breen,
Brian Pollak, TJ Gumiela and
Chris Jones also turned heads with
their aquatic finesse. In the Pro-Am division,
Unsound Surf Shop's Dave Juan took
the win and $500. For more on the Jellyfish

BLAHS
In
a tragic opening to this installment of the Mid-Atlantic
Blahs, we're sorry to report that 23-year-old Manasquan,
NJ, surfer Trevor Allan Dickson died from
complications due to a head injury suffered during
a downhill skateboard run on the Big Island of Hawaii
in early October. A small, tight-knit beachside
community consisting of several generations of surfers,
the town of Manasquan (along with surrounding Monmouth
and Ocean Counties) was shocked and grief-stricken
at the loss of one of their own as reports started
hitting ESM immediately after Dickson's
accident. Bruce Chrisner, a longtime ESM
Senior Photographer and uncle to Trevor through
his marriage to wife Ellen, sent in the following
memorial to the young man, which speaks not only
for the family and their friends but especially
for the surf mates with whom he shared one of life's
most special bonds: "What a sweetheart kid who touched
so many. If it had anything to do with the ocean
or frozen water, whether it was snowboarding, surfing,
skating or riding his Harley, Trevor was
on it. He lived for it all and loved it all with
equal passion and stoke. Starting out on a bodyboard
and becoming an accomplished, sponsored rider, Trevor
eventually followed in his dad Allan's footsteps
to become a standup surfer ripping up the local
jetties and wherever he traveled. Trevor
would charge any wave, always having the most fun
and wearing that trademark grin of his. He will
be extremely missed at The Peak and on land
by so many people. Ride on, Trevor. We all
love you." A paddle-out memorial service was held
on October 16th at Manasquan Inlet's world-renowned
Peak, attended by several hundred people.
Donations in his memory can be made to www.surfaidinternational.org
and www.cleanoceans.org. A memorial site to Trevor
has been set up at www.trevordickson.com. We here
at Eastern Surf send our belated condolences
to his parents, Allan and Margaret Dickson,
as well as to the entire Dickson family and
all his surfing brethren at the Inlet.
Belated congratulations to Kitty Hawk, NC, goofyfoot and Bali frequenter Ashley Heath and his lovely bride, Johana Tsen, who were married on August 18th. "Selamat wassalam." Ocean City, MD, ledg' Chris Tilghman recently returned from a trip to Tavarua with his son Ian and his buddy Mike Lawson. The crew reported epic conditions and, as a bonus, they got Surfing Magazine photographer Scott Winer to document their shreddings. Look for the evidence in a future edition of ESM's Traveler's Notebook. News flash! Pennsylvania ripper Michael Ciaramella just moved to Stone Harbor, NJ. Former Marylander Dr. Bruce "Snake" Gabrielson urges everyone to take a look at the new website for the National Surf Schools and Instructors Association (NSSIA) at www.nssia.org.
Speaking of Rhodes, he's been spending a lot of time repping lately, handling accounts for Custom X, Cartel and Manta Bodyboards, SFP Distribution, Redley Fins and Sandals, and Savage Clothing. Savage Clothing? What the hell's that, you may ask? Go to www.savagerips.com and find out.
In other Jersey deets, at this year's barrel-blessed OP Newport Classic--a WQS 2-star that's part of the Macy's California Trifecta Series--Ocean City, NJ's, Andrew Gesler went from third to first in the last few seconds of his quarterfinal against Hawaiian ace Jesse Merle-Jones by lucking into a huge frontside tube and punctuating the ride with a heavy bash that earned him an 8.5. Gesler eventually went down in the semis to eventual 3rd-place getter Asher Nolan, but still earned heaps of respect, some valuable 'QS points and more than a grand in cash. We thought we were done with the Andrew Gesler Blahs, but then we caught word that he left longtime shop sponsor 7th Street Surf Shop to join the Heritage Surf & Sport squad. Hey y'all, Mid-Atlantic Marketing Machine's Cane Faircloth suggests we take a look at Salty's Surf Shop's website, as they just installed a dope webcam overlooking the surf at Ocean Isle Beach Pier, NC. Visit www.saltyssurfshopoib.com to see how the OIB Pier is holding. Green Room Boardsports manager Pete Viele now rides for Analog Clothing. Redsand teamed up with the Surfrider-Cape Fear Chapter to present the first-ever Cape Fear Clean Water Classic on October 8th-9th in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Graced with waves provided by Tropical Storm Tammy, the widely talked about contest showcased team competition ranging from Redsand teamriders, Surfrider chapters, regional colleges and local surf stores. Sweetwater Surf Shop came out on top in the Shop division, with riders Tony Butler, Carl Wallin and Tony Silvagni all snagging individual titles, as well. A luau naturally followed, courtesy of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, with food, games, live music and a raffle stoking out all in attendance. Click over to www.cfcleanh2oclassic.com for more. Speaking of Carl Wallin, he now proudly rides for Wave Riding Vehicles Surfboards. Hats off to Rip Curl teamer Jason Andre and Whitney Hines for hosting the ESA's annual pizza party at Angelo's in Buxton during ESA Easterns week! Virginia Beach, VA, surfer-turned-New York City model/ actor Keith Keller announced that he will be opening a surf bungalow hotel in Ecuador within the next year to cater to people wishing to ride the country's untapped waves, as well as the Galapagos Islands. He's currently investigating the potential and reports a plethora of reefbreaks and rock points. Stay tuned to these pages for developments. Vah Beach wahine Lindsey Bowman just signed with Roxy.
Leftover wahine news that didn't quite make the cut last ish finds Kelly Nicely signing with Surf Diva. While Jesse Hines, Will Skudin, Jason Andre, Cash Barris, Morgan O'Connell and Brett Barley were reaping the barrels of the year in Hatteras, Mid-Atlantic madmen Billy Hume, Carl Wallin and Frank Walsh were scurrying around Canada with New Hampshire's Jack Fleming and Brian Nevins searching for the perfect setup. Look for the trip to come to light in a future edition of Surfing Magazine. Congratulations to eternal Kitty Hawk, NC, ripper and original Pirate Trent Barkley and his beautiful significant other Krista Downing, who were married on October 29th in a wonderful, beachside ceremony in Duck, NC. Some East Coast surfers who were spotted at the wedding included ESM Editor Matt Pruett, Justin Fucci, Martin Fucci, Billy Hume, Nigel Haynes, Ashley Heath, Brad "Ants In My Pants" Fitzgerald, Jeff Myers, Matt Soriente, Christian Kane, Brent McCoy, Harvey Hess, Matt Paulson, Leif Lindquist, Matt Neher, Jesse Hines, Brant Doyle and ASG frontman Jason Shi. Here's raising our Pabsts to you, Trent and Krista! Best of luck. By Matt Pruett |

A
lot of East Coasters are making some serious
noise in pro events lately. Firstly, big ups
to Puerto Rico's Brian Toth, who copped
an equal-9th in Brazil's Onbongo Pro
for 1250 points. Meanwhile, fellow Rican Dylan
Graves rocked to the semifinals of the very
stacked WQS 4-star O'Neill Coldwater
Classic. And following the Coldwater,
the third contest comprising Macy's California
Trifecta Surf Series, Jax star Asher
Nolan amassed a total of 2370 points, deeming
him the overall winner of the series and sending
him home with the $5000 bonus prize. However,
Eastern Surf felt compelled to
give the hero award this issue to our boy Kyle
Garson, who scored an 8.5 en route to winning
the final of the $25,000 8th O'Neill Trophy--a
WQS 2-star event held at "the Spanish
Left," Arona/ Los Realejos, Tenerife,
in the Canary Islands on October 12th-16th.
Good show, Beaker!
Hilton Head, SC's, Shane Gould wrote in to update us with happenings about himself and "the biggest little company in America," Fuel Clothing. Shane is off to Japan to work on next year's snow gear line. Then he'll visit Hong Kong before hitting up Bali for a two-week surf jaunt. Fuel's also got a fresh new site running, too. Check it out at www.fuelclothing.com. How hot is Mikey DeTemple right now? Well, let's see--the Indialantic, FL, stylist won the Pro Longboard division of the Oakley Unsound Pro, then took the Brave New World-O'Neill Jersey Shore Longboard Pro/Am, and then finished 2nd on the 2005 U.S. Professional Longboard Championship Tour behind three-time World Champ Colin McPhillips. Feeling the sizzle, Ron Jon immediately signed Mikey to a two-year contract. That's how hot the kid is. While their surfing is definitely no-nonsense, you have to admit the Hobgood brothers can be pretty dang funny. Visit www.surfermag.com and check out the "American Idol" skit they performed along with Matt Beacham for the Surfer Poll Awards. It'll have you in stitches. Rob Willis is this month's man on the move, as the native Floridian left his Billabong National Sales Manager position to jump aboard Rusty Surfboards and Apparel as their Vice President of Sales. Effective November 1st, Hunter Joslin's Indo Board Balance Trainer's home office has relocated to 131 Tomahawk Drive, Unit 15A, Indian Harbour Beach, FL 32937. The new phone number is 321-777-6021. The Huntster threw down a (what else?) stylin' wine-soaked celebration with a slew of Tomahawk surf biz guys in attendance.
Chris Hess, a Satellite Beach surfer who's now attending school at UNF in Jacksonville, FL, recently picked up a few new sponsors--Jedidiah Clothing, Etnies Shoes, BAT Surfboards and AOE Surf Shop. Be on the lookout for Chris blowing up at a beach near you. Revelation Productions' John Gilmore just completed a DVD about surfing the Florida Panhandle called Emerald Dreams. The film focuses mainly on the swells that hit the area over a year's time from Hurricane Ivan to Hurricane Rita. Emerald Dreams also takes a look at more than 20 Gulf Coast surfers of various ages, from Yancy Spencer III and other pioneers to various preteen phenoms, complete with interviews on their likes and dislikes concerning waveriding on the Emerald Coast. Ninety percent of the footage was shot near Panama City Beach at various locations (including that certain "secret spot" everyone's been flooding lately). The DVD also offers a few bonus features such as clips from the infamous Hurricane Katrina swell and the 2005 Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro. Visit www.revelationproductions.net for more and stay tuned next issue for a Peepshow review of Emerald Dreams. We were able to dispatch one of our own to the Gulf Coast to record the boys ripping the Wilma swell. Big thanks to Naples, FL, native Chris Wilson for volunteering to shoot those video clips for our next (2006) video release, while the record-tying 26th storm of the 2005 Tropical Season slammed into nearby Cape Ramon, devastating the area with Cat. 3 intensity. While photographing another hurricane swell (there were so many storms, we can't even remember her name), ESM Chief Photographers Tom Dugan and Dick Meseroll were particularly impressed with two previously unknown Miami, FL, surfers--Robert Azevedo and Sebastian Scemla--who were getting the best lefthand tubes of the day rifling down at OK Signs. Brandon Sanford, a 16-year-old ripper from the Dominican Republic, recently relocated to the Sunshine State to get more exposure, and he's been adjusting quite well to the move, even making some NSSA finals. The Volcom/ Electric/ Reef rider is still feeling a bit homesick, though, writing in, "the best way to describe my home is, if Puerto Rico is the East Coast's Hawaii, then the Dominican Republic is our Indonesia." He might be right, seeing as Sanford's grandmother owns apartments in DR that have hosted such notable Right Coast names as Ben Bourgeois, Dylan Graves, Brian Toth and Ian Parnell. Here's wishing Brandon all the luck in the world as he climbs the amateur ranks. Big cigars to Bryan and Tiffany Hewitson on the birth of their second child, Braden Hewitson.
Brandon "Clean Up" Campbell (he earned that nickname because he loves west sets at Sunset Beach, not because he picks up trash and palm fronds at Sebastian Inlet State Park, although now that we think about it, he does that, too)... Anyway, Brandon is now the official team manager of Spectrum Surf Shop and he wanted to get the word out that Spectrum is currently looking for teamriders. If you think you got what it takes, e-mail surfspectrum@yahoo.com. On a side note, while on yet another vacation in North Carolina, Campbell caught a flow deal from BJ Freeman's clothing company, Unknown Souljah. Island Water Sports of Jensen Beach, FL, was hit especially hard by Hurricane Wilma. The east winds peeled the roof back so IWS has temporarily moved operations to Jensen Beach Storage, 1/8 of a mile west on Jensen Beach Blvd. at the Railroad Crossing, Bay #86. Their number is 772-334-1999. A pacemaker, two previous heart attacks, diabetes and prostate disease still weren't enough to stop 61-year-old Brian Bobb (the father of Satellite Beach, FL, wahine Ashley Bobb) from rescuing a 29-year-old Lakeland surfer, Jeremiah Chapman, from drowning when the young man's leash snapped during a Hurricane Tammy swell at Boardwalk. Chapman was caught in a severely exhausting rip, had swallowed some seawater, and looked to be in grave danger. With no lifeguards on duty, the quick-thinking Bobb grabbed a boogie board and paddled out to retrieve him. A little over a week later, Chapman returned to Brevard County with two friends to thank the hero, presenting him with a Martin & Co. Dreadnought guitar, considered by many to be among the best handmade guitars on the market. So if you run into Brian, give him a pat on the back for his bravery. Hurley East Coast Team Manager Justin Brown rang in to let us know about a couple new teamriders the big H picked up: Oliver Kurtz from Vero Beach, FL, and Alex Walker from Ft. Lauderdale. Congrats to the Surf Station, who won the final leg of the O'Neill Bragger's Cup Surf Shop Challenge presented by Transworld Surf at Sebastian Inlet on October 15th.
This just in! Adam Wickwire now rides for Rip Curl Wetsuits and Clothing. Hot Tuna recently hired Brandon "Chunk" Haines as their new marketing manager. Call him up at 714-891-8904 or visit www.hottunanation.com. Compiled by Matt Pruett
