Two Coasts One Ocean

Surfrider Foundation’s Two Coasts One Ocean event comes to Montauk, New York on August 13th

August 3, 2016–Montauk, NY—The Surfrider Foundation, a national grassroots environmental organization, is proud to announce that its second annual Two Coasts One Ocean bicoastal event, will take place on August 13th beginning at 6:30 PM in Montauk, Long Island, New York.

Two Coasts One Ocean events unite efforts in communities on both coasts in celebration of Surfrider’s initiatives to save the waterways, reduce pollution in our oceans and protect the beaches. The events will be produced by Huka Entertainment, who has partnered with the Surfrider Foundation to drive awareness and create one-of-kind experiences for Two Coasts: One Ocean. The Montauk event will be hosted by a committee of locally-devoted influential figures including Cynthia Rowley, Julie Gilhart, Julia Chaplin, Peter Davis, Lisa Spellman, and Morgan Collett.

Two Coasts One Ocean in Montauk will help fund two critical regional clean water and coastal preservation programs. The expansion of Surfrider’s Clean Water Initiative will build a water-testing lab at Stonybrook University to monitor water quality and notify the public about where and when it is safe to swim. The second project addresses sea level rise and coastal erosion through innovative research that will help protect Eastern Long Island’s coastline.

“Our Eastern Long Island Chapter identified two important projects that will ensure clean water and protect the beautiful coastlines of Eastern Long Island. Surfrider connects our national experts with our chapters to address issues from the ground up. Strong, local community connections are what makes our work successful and locally relevant,” said Dr. Chad Nelsen, CEO of the Surfrider Foundation.

A short film, commissioned by Surfrider Foundation, shot by pro surfer, photographer and filmmaker Mikey Detemple and narrated by actor John Slattery (of “Mad Men” fame) will drive awareness for Montauk’s water quality issues and reinforce the need for local water monitoring.

Two Coasts One Ocean guests will gather for a formal, locally sourced dinner, set against a stunning natural backdrop. Much like surfers protect the locations of their favorite breaks, this year’s Montauk event will be held at a beautiful “secret” location to be disclosed only to ticketholders. Specialty cocktails featuring Finlandia Vodka will complement a full bar sponsored by Finlandia. The music stylings of Savannah Buffett and local musicians will entertain guests during a sunset cocktail hour on the water. A highlight of the evening will be the live auction featuring an exclusive trip to Volcom’s Pipeline house on the North Shore of Oahu, a trip to the Billabong Pipeline Masters and an exciting VIP trip to Las Vegas to meet Coldplay.

Event sponsors include Don Q Rum, Finlandia Vodka, D’Angelico Guitars, UBS Sustainable Investing and committed individual philanthropists.
