CELEBRATION OF SUMMER

  • subtitle: 10th Annual Steel Pier Classic & Surf Art Expo Overcomes Small Waves To Kick Off Virginia Beach’s High Season

Written by  Jeffrey Myers
Thursday, 6/06/13

TURF: Billabong Presents Coastal Edge 10th Annual Steel Pier Classic & Surf Art Expo; 1st Street Jetty, Virginia Beach, VA; May 25th-27th, 2013.

ENERGY: With sunny skies and beautiful weather, Virginia Beach’s 1st Street Jetty was packed each day of this incredible event with surf holding in that contestable knee- to waist-high range, showing better form through low tide conditions. Art to admire, delicious eats to purchase, every division under the sun competing, live music, and a Memorial Day paddleout dedication to our troops, the 10th Annual Steel Pier Classic & Surf Art Expo had a little bit of everything for the weekend warrior, Virginia Beach vacationer, competitive surfer, aspiring artist, child, grown-up and family alike.

FIRST TIME AT THE FIGHT CLUB: This being the 10th anniversary of this event, chances are most everyone in the community is quite familiar with its greatness. But with competitive divisions offered for every age and skill level, plenty of newbies got their first taste of this awesome contest.

SLIDE: With so many divisions competing in this event, the tell-all tale of the weekend quite honestly lies in the final results listed below. Highlights included Virginia Beach's own Michael Dunphy backing up his 2013 contest campaign with another victory in the Men’s Pro Shortboard, while Jacksonville, FL’s, Justin Quintal took down the Men's Pro Longboard, Kaitlin Maguire won the Women’s Pro Longboard, and a very determined Cindy Strokes was the lone lady completing the Women’s 5-Mile SUP race. Congratulations to each and every finalist and competitor competing in this year’s event, as this gathering of our oceanic tribe was nothing shy of another year’s hard work paying off with complete success!

THE PAIN: The only pain in this year's event was our Memorial Day thoughts and prayers going out to all of the beautiful humans that have experienced the loss of a loved one during their support of keeping our beloved America all that it can be. Without the support of our troops, life in the United States would never allow us the freedom, opportunities, and benefits to be all we can be as Americans. God Bless each and every one of you, fallen and in flesh, for such noble dedication!

THE MAN: Well, the man and woman of this event are the very talented and selfless Mary and Dean Knight for putting on such a tremendous contest for us all going on ten years solid to date! These two, along with a host of others, strive in all they do to make every Memorial Day's holiday one to remember. The Steel Pier Classic has stayed true to its roots and grows in excellence with each year running thanks to this couple’s vision and dedication. And for this, we thank you, Dean and Mary!

YOU DO NOY TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB: “It's a lot of hard work for a small family like mine to produce this contest. But seeing the smiles on all the kids’ faces makes it so worth it. I give my sincere thanks to the community of VB for their support and love." –Contest queen Mary O'Brien Knight, expressing her sincere gratitude to the Virginia Beach surf community for sharing their support of the Steel Pier Classic

“We’re pretty lucky around here for contests and waves. Luck ran out this year, but Dean Knight always does a good job of running the pro division when the waves are best. Seems like we have two ECSCs now!” –Men’s Pro Shortboard runner-up Philip Goold
