  • subtitle: ESA NORTHEAST REGIONALS HAND OUT FINAL EASTERNS INVITES

The ESA’s 2013 Northeast Regional Championships went down in Sea Isle City, NJ, from May 17th-19th, with a live webcast covering all the action, and top talent from New England, New York, New Jersey, and the Great Lakes out in the water vying for invitations to the 46th Annual Easterns, which will also be a qualifier for the Surfing America Prime series and the Surfing America USA Championships.

“The contest was so much fun,” said ESA Executive Director Michelle Sommers. “Although the waves were pretty small, they remained consistent throughout the event, and the competitors put on a fantastic show. The local businesses and South Jersey surf community really came out to support the ESA. It was nice to bring our event to an area affected by Hurricane Sandy to help support the local economy, and Sea Isle City really pulled out the stops to show the ESA a good time.”

The biggest news of the weekend came from the Open Shortboard division, where, after already earning top-honors in the Junior Women’s division, Southern New Jersey ESA All-Star Cassidy McClain also took out all the guys to claim the Open crown, becoming the first woman in ESA history to ever do so. Central New Jersey dominated some of the other marquee divisions, with Patrick Parenty claiming Junior Men’s, Spencer Bridges winning Boys, and Jude Clark taking Menehunes.

Miller Overbeck represented the Empire State well, with a Girls division victory, while South Jersey’s Tom O’Brien took the Jimmy Lewis SUP division. The Junior Iron Man and Iron Man awards went to Spencer Bridges and Tom O’Brien, respectively, and Kevin Dewald claimed the Hot Wave Award with his score of 9.07. There was also a fun All-Star Tag-Team event won by the ESA’s Northern New England district.

The ESA sent out thanks to Sea Isle City, Imperial Cerveza, and Heritage Surf & Sport, along with all the other local and national sponsors who helped make the event a success, and now that the last regional event has concluded, all sights are set on the fast-approaching Easterns championships coming up on September 15th-21st in Nags Head, NC.
