The 2014 NSSA Nationals wrapped up last Thursday at the Huntington Beach Pier in Southern California. And while most East Coasters were frothing hard over Hurricane Arthur's one-and-done 4th of July arrival, some of our finest representatives were winning titles and taking names among the United States' best U18 surfers. Our NSSA Nationals Update posted last week covered all the College, High School, and Explorers action, so this 30-shot gallery serves as the final say on how our guys and girls performed in fun Orange County surf.
Our two winners in Open competition were North Carolina's Stevie Pittman in Juniors Airshow and Central Florida's Caroline Marks, who also finished 2nd in Open Girls to Hawaii's Brisa Hennessy, who she went on to beat in Open Women's. The Rightside had a host of other finalists in Open competition, too, including New Jersey's Maddie Peterson (4th-place, Open Women's); Central Florida's Tommy Coleman (2nd-place, Open Boys); Virginia Beach's Parker Sawyer (2nd-place Open Longboard); New Jersey's Spencer Bridges (3rd-place, Open Longboard); and North Florida's Jazmine Dean (4th-place, Open Longboard). (Full results, including Explorer, Collegiate, and High School, can be found here.)
Stay tuned next week for a freesurf gallery of the East Coast's best giving Huntington Beach and surrounding areas a good going over. And until then, let's remember that, even with hurricane swell in the water and on our minds, the best young surfers on the East Coast still made one hell of an impact last week at America's surfing epicenter.
