  • subtitle: 2014 NSSA East Coast Regional Championships Bring A Whole New Level Of Competitive Fire To New Smyrna Beach

Written by  Tom Dugan
Friday, 4/11/14

At this year's NSSA East Coast Championships in New Smyrna Beach, the first day of the contest on Thursday was small, then on Friday the surf came up to about shoulder- to head-high and was real clean in the morning then choppy throughout the rest of the day. Saturday was really clean all day long with very little wind. On Sunday, though, the winds switched around a good bit. Throughout the whole weekend, the conditions changed a lot, and the tide really has a lot to do with the size of the waves at New Smyrna Beach. That final day, the wind was really strong offshore for a while, and it was a lot of work getting into the waves and staying in them without getting blown out the back. But that was only for maybe an hour. Low tide was very hard too, because it would get small. Other times, though, like the morning high tide with offshore winds, were about as good as it gets. The kids were having a blast.

The waves were so good, and it was warm. Some of the girls were in their bikinis, and the guys would go out in their baggies. Other guys had full wetsuits on, but a lot of people were just wearing tops or swimsuits. A lot of the competitors were from out of state, so they were enjoying it. The weather was hot. I think it got up to 88, so it was warm, and the kids were taking advantage of it and just surfing non-stop.

During the contest, there was this big rip that popped up right where the competitors were supposed to be surfing. To the side of it was the freesurf area, so the contest surfers ended up going so far into that area to get waves that you could hardly even find them. You could see the rip going right through the contest area, and when the waves would actually get in through there, they would be kind of nice, but most of it was real bumpy because of the rip, so everyone was surfing way to the North, especially on the finals day. That meant that a lot of the heats were actually decided in the freesurf zone.

It ended up being a lot of the same names in the finals, but the placing would juggle around. What I really noticed about this year's NSSA East Coast Championships was that, as the days went on, the caliber of surfing raised. Everyone was taking chances that they usually wouldn’t take on waves. No one was surfing safe, because you couldn’t. Not if you wanted to advance. People were going for things that would either make them or break them, and they were pulling it off. I definitely noticed better surfing than last year. There was just more aggression. By the final day, everyone was surfing at 110 percent. They were just going for it, which I really enjoyed watching.
