  • subtitle: Rightside’s Finest Crowned At 46th Annual ESA Easterns Surfing Championships

While the ESA’s iconic Easterns Surfing Championships have been held an hour and a half north of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for the last few years, Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head has ably filled in as a choice location to crown the best surfers on the Rightside. And 2013, the event’s 46th annual running, was no different, with surfers hailing from the Gulf Coast all the way up to the Great Lakes battling for bragging rights in 25 different divisions.

Conditions weren’t perfect this year, starting with small waves before transitioning into heavy nor’easter winds early in the week of September 16th-22nd for adult and longboard competition. But as usual on the Outer Banks, the breeze kicked up some thumping beachbreak surf for the action-packed youth finals that finished out the contest last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. “The weather and waves definitely proved challenging for the start of the [contest],” said ESA Executive Director Michelle Sommers. “The waves on Sunday and Monday were small and clean, but for the adult finals on Tuesday, we had northeast winds in excess of 25mph! [Conditions] cooperated for the last few days of competition, though, and the surfers really gave it their all.”

Under Sommers’ leadership, the ESA has continued to polish its professional act, and this year, a live webcast provided by Space Coast Productions reached over 17,000 viewers during the event, with all the action still looping at www.SurfESA.org throughout next week. “It’s great to be able to allow the competitors to view the webcast of the event as it was originally shown,” Sommers said. And with Outer Banks kingpin Mickey McCarthy serving as official event photographer, the flood of imagery from Easterns was top notch throughout the week.

While parsing 25 divisions of competition down is impossible to do, a handful of storylines did stand out. Southern North Carolina’s Tyler Faulkner was one of only two double division winners, emerging victorious in both the marquee Open Shortboard final and the stacked Under Armour Junior Men’s event, while also claiming a share of the Hot Wave Award. Central Florida’s Kieran Grant was the other repeat winner, taking home Men’s and the Jimmy Lewis Open SUP divisions.

In Junior Women’s, the ESA enjoyed its first all-All-Star final, with Cassidy McClain, Grace Muckenfuss, Darsha Pigford, and Piper Austin representing the ripping now on the organization’s wahine side. Meanwhile, Rhode Island power couple Ana and Chuck Barend were jointly presented with the Easterns Sportsmanship Award for going above and beyond the call of duty throughout the week in support of the event and their fellow competitors.

The ESA also sends special thanks to the Town of Nags Head, Sun Realty, The Outer Banks Tourism Bureau, Kitty Hawk Surf Company, Café Lachine, Waveriders Coffee, Hatteras Island Christian Fellowship, and all the other local sponsors who helped make the event a success. National sponsors who helped make Easterns happen include Under Armour, Sun Bum, Hyperflex Wetsuits, Starboard Surfboards, Boardstix, Inc., Coca-Cola, Jimmy Lewis SUP, Catch Surf, Surfer Magazine and Swellinfo.
