TURF: 2nd Annual South End Surf Contest To Benefit The Samaritan Center Of Coastal Jersey Hosted By Bare Wires Surf & Skate Shop; South End Surfer’s Beach, Spring Lake, NJ; June 8th, 2013.

ENERGY: Although Tropical Storm Andrea lost her intensity by the time she hit the New Jersey coast, the waves she delivered last Saturday gave contestants a second consecutive lucky year at the South End Surf Contest. With a steady stream of slightly overhead, six-foot surf coming in, even the judges were tempted to get out there. And after hours of uncertainty on whether it was going to rain or shine, the clouds opened up to blue skies around 3:00 p.m.

SLIDE: Yes, this is a surf contest — but the overall vibe was about getting local groms amped on the beginning of summer, the fun waves on tap, and just having fun, which went along well with the benefit’s message. Last year, the South End Surf Contest raised $1,540 for To Write Love On Her Arms, which provides positive outlets for kids suffering from depression, suicidal thoughts, and self-injury. But this year, Bare Wires Surf & Skate Shop co-owners Brian Smith and Adam Holloway looked closer to home and donated proceeds to The Samaritan Center of Coastal New Jersey.

In the water, a handful more older locals participated in the Open Shortboard division this year than in 2012, giving younger competitors lots of role models to look up to. Half of the money collected via Open Shortboard entries was given to the winner while the rest of the proceeds went to the fundraiser. But old or young didn’t matter — everyone entered in the event was making a difference and enjoying themselves while doing it.

Fast-rising grom Alex Brooks snatched back 1st-place in the 16-18 division after being taken down last year by Liam Mahoney, and in the 14-15 division, Pat Parenty took the win. South Jersey standout Mike Vanaman claimed 1st-place in 12-13, with this group of future stars really impressing the judges with their guts and commitment in solid surf. Meanwhile, Logan Kamen rode to victory in 11 & Under, in addition to finishing an impressive 2nd in 12-13. And finally, in bodyboard competition, Pat Rosace won High School and Chris Disco won Elementary School.

THE PAIN: Charles Mencel, winner of the Open Shortboard division at last year’s inaugural South End Surf Contest, wasn’t around to defend his title this year. So runner-up Pat Schmidt battled it out with fellow young gun Tommy Ihnken for the marquee title. Schmidt seemed to have a lock on 1st-place when Ihnken nailed a full-rotation air reverse, providing a solid ending to the final heat. Big guy and 4th-place Open Shortboard finisher Austin Aronsson also seemed to be doing well in the final until he took his surfboard to the face after trying a floater on a meaty section. He walked away OK, but it was Tommy Ihnken that ultimately walked away with $320 and 1st-place.

THE MAN: In this case, you may want to say The Women because the Kwiecinski sisters are really making names for themselves in the water. Jessica placed 3rd in the 16-18 division for a second year in a row, while her twin sister, Casey, was only one of two girls to take on the Open Division, also making it to the semifinals in 16-18. And as mentioned before, fearless grom Logan Kamen was awarded a custom Chemistry Surfboards model by the judges, who were impressed with his dedication to catching solid waves at the young age of 11.

YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB: “It was very hard to just sit here and watch firing waves today.” Bare Wires Surf & Skate co-owner and contest organizer Adam Holloway on judging the South End Surf Contest
