Drownings currently at an increase 85% on the Great Lakes 186 total drownings since 2010 GREAT LAKES, USA – The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project (GLSRP) announces its current drowning statistics. With Tuesday’s drowning of a 14 year old boy at North Avenue Beach, he is the 25th person to drown in the Great Lakes this year. Drownings on the Great Lakes are currently at an 92% increase over 2011; a 92% increase over 2010. Overall since 2010, 186 people have drowned in the Great Lakes (74 in 2010; 87 in 2011; and 25 to date in 2012). (GLSRP) is about saving lives. The GLSRP tracks drowning statistics, teaches “Water Safety Surf Rescue” classes, and leads the “Third Coast Ocean Force” rip current awareness campaign on the Great Lakes. It is a nonprofit corporation that is a Chapter of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA), the 2011 “Lifesaver of the Year” award winner, presenter at the NDPA’s 11th Annual Symposium, the 2012 winner of the “Outstanding Service to the Great Lakes Community” award presented by the Dairyland Surf Classic, and presenter at the 2nd International Rip Current Symposium Nov. 1st, 2012 in Sydney, Australia.
