Groms Run Wild At 2nd Annual Arnette All Day Antics Presented By Mad Dog Surf Shop By Travis Ajay; Photos by Duce Smith
TURF: 2nd
Annual Arnette All Day Antics Presented By Mad Dog Surf Shop; Sunglow Pier,
Daytona Beach, FL; August 21st, 2010.
ENERGY: As
we pulled up to Sunglow Pier on a sweltering Saturday morning, things were
looking pretty dismal for the 2nd Annual Arnette All Day Antics Presented By
Mad Dog Surf Shop. My brain started scrambling — what could we do to make
this no-wave day fun for the groms? It is the Arnette All Day Antics, right?
But as each minute passed while we were setting up, every set seemed to get a little
bigger than the last. “Is this really happening?” I thought.
FIRST
TIME AT FIGHT CLUB: With most of Florida's top young performers 25 minutes
away at the Rip Curl GromSearch in New Smyrna Beach, the day was shaping up to
give some of the Central Florida underdogs a chance to have a breakout day and
get some solid results.
SLIDE: Before we even
got started, the Antics were going down. Bernie and Rita Crouch, co-sponsors of
the event and owners of Mad Dog Surf Shop, showed up with a handful of Naish
SUPs, while LJ Kuzmovich, founder of Pure Life Surf School, also came down with
about 20 soft-tops. The combination helped get everyone in the water at some
point of the day. Even the DNA girls Michelle and Nina grabbed a couple SUPs
and got cooled off.
Once the action got started, the surf was up to
waist-high on most of the groms, with some nice little sets coming off the Pier
every once in a while. Solid surfing came out of all four divisions, but as
usual it was the 10 and under crowd that stole the show. The small, clean
conditions allowed kids as young as five to get some of the best rides of their
lives. In the end, Andrew Fossom outlasted the field for the win and a brand-new Arbor mini-skateboard.
Making the drive from Brevard County worth it,
Sam Duggan took down the 14 and under division with some smooth small-wave
surfing. Sam double-dipped, also making the 18 and under final, but finished
runner-up in a tight one to fellow double-dipper and Girlz champ Haley Watson
— yes, she schooled the boys in Juniorz 18 and under too. Watch out for this ripping
Flagler Beach wahine! Haley also took home a beautiful Arbor longboard, but I'm
not sure what was more surprising to her: taking the win or getting an ice-cold
watercooler shower from Magou?
At days end, every competitor and even a few
lucky parents went home with plenty of Arnette schwag and smiles on their faces.
One lucky grom, Kai Harkness from the 10 and under division, got his name
pulled out of a bag and took home a shiny new 5’6” Surftech donated by Mad Dog.
THE
PAIN: None whatsoever, except maybe for Duggan, Jimmy Cumiskey, Alex Zappone,
Cyrus Jamider, and Zach Hiller, who got beat by wahine wonder Haley Watson in
Juniorz 18 and under.
THE
MAN: Major thanks go out to all of the families for their support and all
of the sponsors who contributed to help make the prizes and goodie bags so awesome.
Even 2001 ASP World Champion CJ Hobgood came through with some Dakine tail pads
three days after the e-mail went out about the event... thanks Ceej! See you
guys in Jacksonville on October 16th for the Arnette All Day Antics Presented By
Sunrise Surf Shop.
YOU
DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB: “This was really cool. It’s great to see what
you guys are doing for these kids, and to see how stoked they are.” –The
man who made it all possible, Greg Arnette, who came down to check out the All
Day Antics
“Seeing little Kai win that surfboard was the
highlight of my day. That’s what it’s all about.” –Daytona Beach legend, Mad Dog
Surf Shop owner/shaper, and Arnette All Day Antics co-sponsor Bernie Crouch
