SOUTHERN LIVING Stalled Front, Quick-Moving Low Pressure Combine To Give Mid-Atlantic And All Points
North An Early-Winter South Swell By Nick McGregor
While several big-name East Coast professionals went
for the Triple Crown gusto in historic 20 to 30-foot Hawaiian surf over the
weekend, an early-December Atlantic south swell had the rest of the Right Coast
crew licking their chops after going right all day Thursday and Friday. Without
getting overly technical on you, here’s what happened: a persistent cold front
stalled out over Florida, bringing several inches of much-needed rain to the
Sunshine State. Unfortunately, with the weather system hugging the coast, the
Southeast was denied substantial waves. But with a fetch of south wind
forming Wednesday night from the warm waters off Florida all the way to the
Canadian Maritimes, south-facing East Coast hallmarks from North Carolina on up
began firing on Thursday. Winds went from sideshore that morning to offshore by
the end of the day, providing a gem of a cleanup for Friday. Rubber was worn,
barrels were navigated, beatings were dished out, and the whole thing was “one
and done” by Saturday.
That gave us just enough time to compile the finest
images from this early-winter south swell event — everything from Outer
Banks widowmakers to Delmarva drainers to Garden State gapers to New England nuggets.
And with top East Coast names like Slater, Hobgood, and Lopez breaking out
their eight-foot-plus Pacific guns out Waimea way, there were plenty of rifling
rights prime for the picking back home.
