RIGHT COAST WHITEOUT Blizzard Of 2009 Delivers Frigid Barrels, Historic Snowfall Just In Time For Christmas By Nick McGregor
Unless you’re stranded on a tropical island sawing
the tops off of coconuts, you’ve probably heard about the historic Blizzard Of
2009, which dropped upwards of two feet of snow everywhere from North Carolina
to Maine last weekend. We’ll save you from the usual weather intricacies, but
basically a large low pressure system formed in the Gulf Of Mexico, tracked
over the Sunshine State bringing 20+ inches of rain to South Florida, and
merged with a cold air mass off the coast of the Carolinas. That kicked the
snow machine in gear, and as the mega-storm slowly rode up the coast, whiteout
conditions ensued. Like any good East Coast storm, the hellacious weather also
produced head-high peaks for Mid-Atlantic and Northeast surfers —
provided they could dig out their cars and traverse the dangerous, ice and
snow-covered roads. So while the rest of us were bundled up in warm blankets sipping
hot chocolate and wrapping Christmas presents in front of the fireplace, a
select group of Rightsiders braved air temps in the 20s and water temps in the 40s,
just for the satisfaction of a few empty barrels.
