Storm Ida Combine
Forces To Deliver Solid Shot Of Autumn Swell By Nick McGregor
While the rest of the
surfing world salivated over every last fin ditch, fiesta, and fart emanating
from the North Shore this past week, Right Coast waveriders from Florida to
Nova Scotia shifted their attention where it belongs: eastward. A complex
weather system parked in the Western Atlantic has kept Florida pumping in the
solid four to six-foot range for nearly a week straight, while South Carolina
and Southern North Carolina have enjoyed similarly clean and well-groomed
conditions from the predominantly ENE/NE swell. Unfortunately, the Outer Banks
and Delmarva have borne the brunt of the storm, with severe coastal flooding
knocking out power, destroying homes, and threatening to open a new inlet just
north of Rodanthe, while New Jersey, New York, and points further north
suffered their own interminable onshore winds and driving rain before a
much-needed cleanup on Sunday.
Due to travel, weather,
and Internet delays — not to mention continued swell in almost all
corners of the East Coast — today we offer a teaser of the sumptuous
photographic goods to come; check back tomorrow for more Nor’Ida coverage from
the finest Right Coast athletes and sharpshooters, all working hard to prove
that the North Shore ain’t the only wave-blessed locale come November.
