HAIRY QUERY Big Money And Stupid Questions Prologue The 48th Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing
Championships Presented By Vans And Monster Energy By Matt Pruett
Rhetorical questions. I hate ‘em. They’re the worst kind of small talk. Not
that I have anything against small talk. It’s fine when nothing is expected from
the receiving end. Go ahead and amuse yourself with the sound of your own
voice. I have this killer Joy Division song in my head anyway.
But breaking the awkward silence (conversely, I love awkward silences) by
asking me questions you already know the answer to? Wow, that’s the kind of
thing that makes me want to feed someone their own flip-flops.
“What’s up with the ECSC this year, bro?”
How am I possibly supposed
to answer something so obtuse and dull? “Gee, I dunno… a grom will go
shellshock at the bikini contest, a drunk squid will get arrested, and Gorkin
will win big money… I’m just sayin’.”
What I won’t say is that the
waves are always crap for this contest (Hurricane Danny certainly proved that
wrong last year), that the action will be boring (I have three… no, make that,
47 words for you: Mini Ramp Jam, BMX and Skate Demos, Live Music, Beach
Volleyball Tournament, World Sand Soccer Association Tournament, U.S. Beach
Flag Football Championships, Beach Cornhole Tournament, Adult Whiffleball
Tournament, 8K Race, 1K Fun Run, Wareing’s Gym Beach Bum Triathlon, Miss ECSC
Swimsuit Pageant… and a lot of surfing), or that the scene at the Virginia
Beach Oceanfront will be quaint and mellow (this is the
East Coast’s answer to the U.S. Open of Surfing, and annually selected as a
“Top 20 Event of the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society).
North America’s oldest surfing contest and the second oldest continuously run
surfing contest in the world, the East Coast Surfing Championships is so big,
it simply invites no room for questioning. Because with everything on offer at
the beach this week in the Old Dominion’s most populous city, the answer’s
always the same…
“YES.”
