It’s hard to believe there was a time when you
couldn’t gawk at photos of yourself and all your discovered treasures on a computer
screen the same day they were taken. Any chimp with a digi and a trigger finger
can get in the game today. Just point, shoot, download, and send.
But before the digital age, surf photography took an
amazing amount of passion, patience, and commitment. Richard “Mez” Meseroll
— who grew up in Point Pleasant, NJ, before setting up shop in Brevard
County, FL, to fertilize the Eastern Surf
Magazine experiment with Tom Dugan — never forgot his own Garden
State roots. Unearthing forgotten gems from hometown hallows like Manasquan,
Jenks, and Bay Head, along with a few other haunts frequented by Jersey
surfers, much of the imagery that follows has not been in the public eye for 40
years, if ever.
