COLLEGIATE
CATALYSTS Handful Of East Coast Teams Eye Success At Upcoming
NSSA National Interscholastic College Championships By Allison Arteaga
With the NSSA National
Championships kicking off next week at Salt Creek, CA, all East Coast eyes are
understandably on our hot young surfers swinging for Open and Explorers titles
against the cream of the junior crop from California, Hawaii, and beyond.
But since other publications
and media outlets devote so much time and space to household names like Andino,
Geiselman, and Coffin, EasternSurf.com decided
to shine a light on the underexposed yet passionate Interscholastic side of
NSSA Nationals competition. The six colleges listed below all qualified for
Nationals by competing at the NSSA East Coast Championships back in April, and
all have achieved varying levels of success — from UCF star Amy Nicholl’s
individual College Women’s title in 2009, to UNC Wilmington’s last-second tie-breaker
loss against Cal State San Marcos that same year.
Why profile the
often-forgotten college students toiling in the NSSA Nationals shadows,
especially when some of them can’t even rally the support and funding needed to
make Nationals in the first place? Well, the Andinos and Geiselmans and Coffins
may be future superstars of the surfing world, but the hard-working,
intelligent, and motivated waveriders listed below will be the next magazine
editors, graphic designers, marketing directors, business owners, and industry insiders steering
our sport into the 21st century.
