WILD ON
E(AST) The 2010 Foster’s Belmar Pro Presented By Eastern
Lines Edition By Jon Coen
You want to have a good time
in September? Come to Belmar, NJ.
Yes, it gets a little crazy.
Yes, the former mayor once officially apologized to the entire borough of Staten
Island for making “guido” references. Yes, Belmar had to enact a “Beer Pong”
ordinance. Yes, Belmar is home to quirky aerialist and blogger Brendan Buckley.
But yes, Belmar fires in
September. And yes, you will have a good time.
This year, the party in
Belmar will last for ten straight days, starting with the Amateur Event and
going right into the traditional Foster’s Belmar Pro Presented By Eastern Lines
weekend.
Okay, it sounds a little
confusing, so let’s break it down: the Amateur Event weekend runs on September
11th and 12th. This gives the Men, Juniors, Boys, Longboarders, and Women a
chance to surf a fun weekend without winding up in the same heat as Shea Lopez.
Lots of heats and parties, along with a few chances to earn a slot into the Pro
Event.
The three-tier scaffolding
will stay up all week as the jam runs right into the following weekend’s main
event. The Foster’s Belmar Pro will start on Friday, September 17th and run
through Sunday the 19th with the Foster’s Pro, the Grade-1 ASP Fins Pro Junior,
the Hannah Women’s Pro, and the Pro Longboard.
Autograph seekers should be
warned — rumors swirling these past weeks have indicated that the usual
big names showing up for the big time just might be bigger this year. In
addition to your Jeremy Johnstons, Sam Hammers, Kyle Garsons, and Lucas Rogerses,
this year you might be seeing your Evan Geiselmans, Kolohe Andinos, and Cory
and Shea Lopezes.
Part of the reason for the
big jump in star power is the Pro Junior. Last year, Bradley Beach-based
Mexicali-style grill Fins Tropicali Cuisine decided to support the youth
movement by making the Pro Junior a Grade-1 ASP-rated event. That not only brought
some new talent into Jersey for the Junior event, but it also raised the level
of surfing for the Pro draw itself.
And with the marquee surfers
raising the level in the water, Eastern Lines and the town of Belmar have
raised the bar as well, with more bands on the beach, wilder parties at night,
and a very good chance that Monmouth County won’t recover from all the surf and
raging until October. They’ll even let you camp on the beach.
Of course, none of this
really matters unless there’re waves. The way that shit is coming off Africa
the last two weeks, the next stop on the swell train could be Belmar.
