NORTH LAKE COMO Foster's Belmar Pro Presented By Eastern Lines Coming This Weekend
By Jon Coen
A few years ago, the town of South Belmar changed its name to “Lake Como.” They
felt Belmar’s brash party image was hurting their real estate values and wanted
to disassociate themselves from the riff raff.
Well, screw you, bunch of uptight
douchebags!
No one likes the college
kids and Joeys that move in for the summer, but they’ve all gone back to their
frat houses by September anyway. Belmar is one of the last towns to actually
welcome people to great events like the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, the New
Jersey Seafood Festival, and the Foster’s Belmar Pro presented by Eastern Lines.
Labor Day is over. But in
Jersey, there’s still one more weekend to rock — one that’s marked by sunburn,
boardwalk pizza, and warm beachbreak bowls. Beginning Friday, September 11th
and running through Sunday the 13th, New Jersey’s top surfers will seek to
defend their turf against legions of shredders from around the country at Sixteenth
Avenue in Belmar. This year, the festivities will also add the ASP Fins Pro
Junior event, a Pro Women division, and a Pro Longboard division to the Pro
Shortboard competition for a $25,000 total purse. And that doesn’t even include
all the movies, parties, and other side-acts outside the big top (like the Paramount
Theatre’s world premiere of the New Jersey surf movie A Pleasant Surprise in conjunction with The Foster’s Belmar Pro, The Asbury Park Film
Initiative, and Jetty).
