HOLIDAY HOOK-UP Late Fall And Early Winter Come Together, Sending Quick Shot Of Swell To All Corners Of The Right Coast By Nick McGregor
We’ll be the
first to admit that the varying levels of swell enjoyed by everyone on the East
Coast over the last week or so weren’t exactly epic. Weird weather, difficult
lighting, wonky winds, head-scratching mixes of long-interval groundswell and
short-period groundswell sending everyone searching for new sandbars… It was almost
enough to make us slough off any sort of swell gallery in favor of waiting for
the real winter goods to turn up come December 21st, when the seasons
officially change.
But once we
tallied up the submissions that came in to EasternSurf.com,
we were surprised at the breadth and scope of what we had: offshore barrels in
Lake Michigan (yes, Lake Michigan). Puntable ramps in Nova Scotia. Reeling
lines in New England. The usual barrel-fest in New Jersey, Delmarva, and North
Carolina. A fun mix of swells in Florida, the last place left on the East Coast
proper where water temps haven’t plummeted below 60 degrees. The Caribbean’s customary
warmwater delights.
Of course,
with another mean cold front pulling off the continental United States, there’s
certainly more to come. Further northwest swell down Lesser Antilles way. The
mystical refracto machine in South Florida. Possibly even more of those subzero
swell events in the Great Lakes. But while we wait for further gems to arrive,
we’ll give you a quick taste of what the last week of November and first week
of December held for East Coast surfers far and near. Nothing extraordinary, nothing
mind-blowing, and nothing to necessarily rant and rave about. But still plenty
solid all the same.
Here’s to
many more random and revved-up swells like this one in the very near future…
