Sussing Out The Sickest Season Yet This Year On The Rightside By
Nick McGregor
I’ve learned
a few lessons with a three-month-old baby at home, the most important being
don’t complain. As soon as I do, my kid rolls over, sits up, smiles, laughs,
grabs his toes, and touches my face, all in the space of a minute. Or, as soon
as I do, my wife reminds me that she didn’t just get much sleep last night
— she got no sleep last night.
What does
this have to do with surfing? Well, if you’ll forgive me, I’m going to complain
about something real quick. Promise it’ll be the last time for a while. Every
six weeks, without fail, right before ESM buckles down for its usual two-week print deadline cluster, the waves up
and down the East Coast go off. Big barrels, rippable peaks, perfect winds,
from Florida to Canada, doesn’t matter if it's spring, summer, fall, or winter — some variation on this theme
happens every damn time.
I’m not
complaining in a
“man-the-surf-at-the-end-of-the-street-is-going-off-and-we-don’t-have-time-to-go”
kind of way, but rather in a
“man-our-inbox-is-slam-full-of-sick-shots-if-we-only-had-four-more-hours-we-could-totally-nail-an-online-swell-gallery-today”
kind of way. So again, forgive us if we get a bit bummed when the bigger
websites, which have bigger staffs and bigger budgets — and, ahem, no magazines to put out every six
weeks — beat us to the swell gallery punch.
But just this
morning I was reminded of that valuable lesson from my infant son: don’t
complain. Because when ESM Photo
Editor Nate Adams showed me this cherry-picked selection from our fantastic
fall, I nearly fell out of my chair. Tell us what you think in the comments below, but I’m
claiming this as one of the best swell galleries we’ve ever posted on EasternSurf.com.
Oh, and
we’ll have a pretty decent new print issue with some pretty interesting little
stories — still available for FREE at your local surf shop, by the way — out next
week. But in the meantime…
