ABOVE AND BEYOND In Between World Tour Heats, Best Of The Best From East, West, And Everywhere Else Light Up Middles Freesurf By Nick McGregor
Lost amidst the devastating news of Andy Irons' tragic death, and
all the hoopla surrounding Kelly Slater’s historic 10th world title, and Dane
Reynolds’ ridiculous blowtail, and Jordy Smith’s ravishing full-rotation 360
air, and Dylan Graves’ inspiring wildcard performance, and all the other
highlights from the Rip Curl Pro Search… wait, you mean there was actually
something else going on down in Puerto Rico last week?
If you
showed up before the contest started, or stuck around after it ended, you would
answer strongly in the affirmative. Every Boricua surfer worth his salt, along
with every East Coaster looking to escape winter and rub elbows with his or her
heroes, was on island last week shredding the tropical juice on offer. Hoping
to impress the legions of top-tier pros, team managers, and international
photographers gathered on the beach. Praying for a wave to come to them with
Jordy, Dane, or Kelly watching. Frothing to prove they’ve got the skills to pay
the bills.
Some
excelled, some didn’t, some performed, some couldn’t, but below we present to
you the highlights from an assortment of freesurf sessions surrounding the main
action at the Rip Curl Pro Search. Until next year… or until next swell, whichever comes first.
