It might not have been Garrett McNamara riding a reported 90-foot wave in Portugal over the weekend. Or Puerto Rico positively going off the Richter scale yesterday. But Sunday, November 6th and Monday, November 7th at Sebastian Inlet might just go down in Central Florida history as the gnarliest days ever for a Quiksilver King Of The Peak. It wasn’t freezing like last year, and chances are it’s probably been bigger at some point in this illustrious event’s storied 17-year history. But everyone from Event Organizer Matt Kechele to longtime documentarians like Tom Dugan and Dick “Mez” Meseroll to the contestants who made up the 54-man draw agreed that in terms of thickness, girth, near-impossible paddle-outs, and death-defying wipeouts, 2011 was probably the most challenging year yet for a KOP.
