MAMA G’S LEGACY Remembering The Life And Work Of Lorraine “Mama G” Guthrie By Nick McGregor
On Saturday, May 7th, one day before Mother’s Day, hundreds of Central
Florida and South Florida locals gathered at Sebastian Inlet for a paddle-out in
honor of Lorraine “Mama G” Guthrie. Photographer, mentor, teacher, mother, sister, aunt…
Mama G was many things to many people. But her smiling face and gracious
presence were undeniable, as she became a fixture at Sebastian Inlet over the
last five years. And most recently, she took a liking to photographing Sebastian Inlet's many up-and-coming groms. Lorraine’s son Matt Guthrie provided these words:
“Knowing that my mom made an impact on so many lives is a great comfort to
my family. Her paddle-out was a fitting tribute to a life that, while cut too
short, was lived to the fullest and centered around family, friends, and surf.
On behalf of the entire Guthrie/Rynasko families, I want to thank everyone for
the overwhelming love and support of our beloved wife, mama, aunt and friend,
Lorraine.”
Below is a photographic tribute to Mama G’s life — the waves she
caught, the images she captured, and the love that was shown to her and her
family over the last tough year. But some of the most touching words were
written by Lorraine herself on a card given to everyone at the paddle-out:
AFTER GLOW
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an after glow of smiles when
day is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly
down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times and bright
and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry
before the sun,
Of happy memories that I leave behind when day
is done.
