Early Spring Swells Awaken East Coast From Winter Torpor By Nick McGregor
If there’s
one constant in the surf publishing biz, it’s that fun waves will arrive without
fail just in time for deadline. Of course, now that your friends at ESM are operating on a web deadline
every day, and an ol’ faithful print deadline every six weeks, that should mean
swells are arriving on the regular, right? Not so this winter, which has seen
more than its fair share of debilitating blizzards, brutal cold fronts, and
depressing flat spells, leading many a man and woman to turn to drink and
sports and general laziness to make it through another long visit with Jack
Frost.
But have no
fear! With our first print deadline of 2011 looming in early March, the surf
gods up above knew the last week of February would be a perfect time to drop
the first bombing sign of spring on everybody from the Caribbean to Florida to
North Carolina to New Jersey to New York. And while we were a bit bummed that
our big web outlet brothers beat us to the punch with their own East Coast
swell galleries yesterday, there’s solace in the knowledge that they’re not
currently stressing over what should be one of the most diverse and
action-packed print editions in ESM’s illustrious
20-year surf publishing history.
So feast
away on the images below, and remember that we’ve still got seven full days to
go until the presses start cranking out our March issue (which you can peep
online and in your favorite surf shopcome March 16th).
What does it all mean? Seven more days of surfed-out bliss for you shred dogs out
there keepin’ the East Coast dream alive — and seven more days of hard
work for us transmitting that mission statement to the world.
