SNOW DAY Northeast Surfers Revel In The White Stuff By Nick McGregor
Another day,
another blizzard — at least that’s the way Northeast surfers have felt so
far this winter, which like the 2009-10 season is going down as one of the most
ferocious on record. Newark, NJ, has reported 62 inches of snow so far this
season, compared to an average of 25. Central Park in New York City has seen 56
inches compared to a usual total of 22. Buildings have collapsed in Connecticut
and Massachusetts, hundreds of cars were stranded on New Hampshire highways
earlier this week, and Portland, ME, had over 20 inches of new snow on the
ground this morning alone.
It’s enough
to make even the most dedicated winter warrior rethink his or her masochistic
passion — but when schools and office buildings are closed, local
economies come screeching to a halt, and simply leaving the house is a task of
epic proportions, what else is a diehard Right Coast surfer to do but paddle
out and forget the snow-bound apocalypse on land?
