WINTER HODGE-PODGE Bitter Cold, Piles Of Snow, And Random Swells Combine To Make January A Frigid Enigma By Nick McGregor
-18° in Maine
yesterday morning. 3° in Bay Head, NJ. Six to eight inches of snow in the Outer
Banks. Water temps in the high 30s in Southern North Carolina. Hoods, gloves,
and booties spotted en masse in North Florida. Yeah, it’s safe to say this
January has been downright frigid, from one end of the East Coast to the other.
Some are even calling it the snowiest, coldest winter in recent memory —
which says a lot, since last winter shivered our timbers plenty bad.
But in between all
those brutal mornings and blizzard warnings, random moments of aquatic joy have
sprung up. Warmwater peaks in Puerto Rico. Dreamy little tubes in Central
Florida. A few fleeting moments of solid offshore joy in South Carolina.
Ice-cold barrels in the Tarheel State. Puntable ramps in Virginia Beach. A
couple of one-and-done days in New Jersey. And enough frozen saltwater in New
England to chill the most hardcore winter surfer to the bone.
It sure as hell ain’t
fall splendor or summer fun, but January did deliver for those Rightsiders brave
enough to stick close to home. While the big boys were chasing glory sections
in Hawaii or golden barrels in California, the rest of us were making do with
the dregs of winter. Below is an ice-encrusted look back, along with an
impassioned plea for the first signs of spring to show up…
