WINTER OF OUR CONTENT Back End Of 2011, First Few Days Of 2012
Provide Plenty Of Wintry Wonderment By Nick McGregor
We’ll keep
this brief: the 2011-2012 Atlantic Winter season began with a whimper, but the
last few weeks have seen an impressive flow of seasonal energy everywhere from
the icy Northeast to the aquamarine Caribbean: pointbreak splendor in New
England, the usual barrel orgies in New Jersey, a few clean-and-green sessions
in the Carolinas, the first freeze of the year in Central Florida and first major
refracto swell of the season in South Florida, and positively bombing
conditions (still bombing as we speak, in fact) down in the Lesser Antilles. Maxed-out
Maverick’s and humongous Hawaii it ain’t — but while the craziest
Rightsiders are still putting their stamp on outer-reef Oahu and cavernous
California, the rest of our wetsuit-clad brethren are holding it down back
home.
ESM’s January 2012 print issue, which
hits surf shops and streets on January 11th, really kicked our ass over the
holiday season, preventing us from putting together a proper swell gallery in
December. But with the New Year comes a fresh, clean slate, along with the
opportunity to look back on the last few weeks of wintry wonderment. Don’t get
too snuggled up scoping this cornucopia of shots, though, as La Niña hasn’t
held the Rightside down completely this winter, as it looks like a whole
‘nother round of swell is on its way late in the forecast. And our March 2012
issue promises to be a ice-caked banger, with winter written all over its
pages. Stay tuned for more…
