"Whatever happened to that guy?" The question isn't always meant to provoke a sad response, somehow inferring that the kid ended up succumbing to drug addiction, or just jaded by the whole surfing deal in general. A lot of times, a question like that just reflects that a surfer's presence was so undeniable and his exit so unrecorded, we can't help but wonder. The Easterns is full of stories like that. One of them belongs to Chad Hopkins, who in 1993 became Maryland's first-ever Men's champ before pulling his own disappearing act. Photo: Dick Meseroll
