| A year before Ricky Rasmussen won his own Easterns title and gave New York surfing an international face, fellow Empire Stater Mike Oppenheimer became the contest's first two-time champ -- winning the Men's crown in '73 and '75. Both of Oppy's titles were earned in powerful tropical surf served up by T.S. Christine and Hurricane Doris, respectively, making one sentiment concurrent among attendees -- there's no place to hold this contest but Hatteras. Photo: Larry Pope |
