Ahh, October. No other month on the East Coast calendar presents a better juxtaposition of waves, weather, and wide-open beaches finely relieved of their summer crowds. The 10th month of the year also marks the point when many of us dust off our fall and winter wetsuits — so there’s no better time to tap eight of the Rightside’s finest freesurfers and get their thoughts on what neoprene does for them. But our October 2014 issue also digs deeper into the biggest environmental issue affecting our neck of the woods: climate change and sea level rise. While global oceans have risen an average of 8 inches over the last century, on the East Coast, many of those totals are far higher. Nearly four feet (!) on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. Three feet in Texas. Over a foot in New York City and Virginia Beach. Now is the time to recognize this impending threat to our very way of life — and figure out the right course of action to preserve it.
