When Dane Reynolds and Jordy
Smith joined the ASP World Tour last year, professional surfing fans and
critics alike cheered the arrival of fresh, postmodern ripping on the circuit. Now
it’s clear that even Dane and Jordy must keep an eye on the international runts
who are hot on their trail. Unfortunately, most of these junior prodigies
aren’t coming from the East Coast — at least not if the surfing going
down in the Maldives last weekend was any indication.
Although Right Coast test pilots Cory Lopez and Brian Toth went deep at the
6-star Prime Sri Lankan Airlines Pro in the Maldives, sizzling Australian
hotshot Owen Wright — who’s already won four ASP Pro Junior events in
2009 — stole the show by annihilating super fun, four to six-foot Pasta
Point — the roping lefthander on Chaaya Island Dhonveli. Wright, who now
holds a commanding lead atop the WQS ratings, netted a 19.23 out of 20 to beat San
Clemente, CA, hotshot Pat Gudauskas in what ASP Head Judge Perry Hatchett called
“one of the top five ASP finals ever.”
Early rounds saw New Smyrna Beach, FL’s, Eric Geiselman and Isabela, PR’s,
Dylan Graves both winning their Round of 128 heats before falling out shortly
thereafter. But former Dream Tour vet from Indian Rocks Beach, FL, Cory Lopez,
and Puerto Rico’s Brian Toth picked up where Gravesy and Geiselgrease left off,
advancing through their Round of 96 and Round of 48 heats. In the three-man
format marking the Round of 24, Lopez held off Hawaiian flair-up Tonino Benson,
while Toth unfortunately fell to on-fire Brazilian Jadson Andre, who eventually
advanced to the semifinals. In the man-on-man Round of 16, Lopez suffered a
narrow defeat to Gudauskas, who in the next quarterfinal completed the first
successful rodeo clown ever in ASP competition, easily earning a perfect 10.
Gudauskas’ heat scores kept
improving from there, lodging a 17.67 in his semifinal before matching up with
Wright in the final. That heat started with no waves scored in the first 10
minutes, resulting in the first restart of a heat (the ASP recently passed the
rule to avoid the kind of wave-starved affairs that frustrate competing surfers
and fans alike). In its first implementation, the rule was a resounding
success, as Wright and Gudauskas went on to score 19.23 and 18.93,
respectively, out of 20. Both surfers combined cutting-edge aerial maneuvers
with stylish, powerful, pointbreak turns. In a vain attempt to snatch victory
from Wright, Gudauskas even landed another flip to earn a second perfect 10
with five minutes left in the final.
Although he didn’t make it
past the Round of 24, Toth maintained his slow and steady climb up the WQS
ratings ladder, matching his highest result of the year with another 1575
points that helped him move up to 30th. Toth doesn’t have any wins
or finals berths yet, but he’s earned enough mid-range results to allow for a
late-season surge — so long as he can keep up with the 21st-century
freakishness that’s rapidly overtaking ASP competition.
As for our hero Cory, the 32-year-old Gulf Coaster had
this to say about where he’s currently at in regards to heat therapy: “I’ve had
18 months away from full-time competition, but just maybe I’m looking at
requalification. I’ve already entered the upcoming five major ASP WQS events
and I’ll assess my situation as I go.”
